I apologise if this has been done. But I figured I'd create a poll (hell, everyone else does)

Anyway, something I never understood about game developers is why do they nerf? Why shouldn't we bring the NC and VS MAX up to par with the so called "overpowered" TR MAX's?

Vote what you think :D

But what does it really matter which way we vote? its not like the devs will really listen to us.

I have no problem with this nerf, if as they have said, this will not start a trend of nerfs. Already people on the official boards are posting nerf this, that, and the other thing.

As long as the DEVs don't nerf everything down until we all carry water guns, I don't mind. Hopefully if any future balancing is needed, that they will look to bring everything up to par rather than nerf.

Hopefully now that the TR maxs are toned down a bit, the game should have much better balance.

Oh yeah this came to mind awhile ago and I'm tired of holding it back. SOE is famous for roleplaying right? so most likely they will include it in this. well TR has been around for over 1000 years right? and NC and VS what a couple months? so what empire's weapons will have been tested and refined? of course TR. I figure if they really want this to work out this is. That the other empires weapons will get more effective over time. (R&D) So we will see I may be right I my be wrong.

Isn't the MAX supposed to be feared and reveared?

Because in that case all empires MAXes should be brought up to some sort of respectable "oh shite its a MAX" level. Instead of "OOOOH it's a pretty purple max, lets fire a few rockets and kill the blighter".

Not like this poll is slanted or anything.

So called overpowered hehe.

The reason we have issues with the Tr max is 2 fold.

1) They are very versatile and do extreme damage before needing a reload.

2) TR have the best anti-max weapon in the Striker.

Double whammy!

I would love to see the TR actually have to aim to kill a max like the other empires (e.g. no missle lock on MAX as they are not vehicles) and see the other MAX beefed up a bit instead of TR max nerfed.

Hmm, they said they found "statistical" data that showed these two Maxes to be out performing the others. Ok, now how to bring it in line...

Adjust code on 2 things or 4. Easy choice, you do 2. Why risk compounding the issue by bring up the other four.

I think it's funny when folks start crying about a "nerf." This game has been out, what, two weeks, and they are still balancing things. Don't be surprised if a few more things get tweeked.

Why don't we just wait to see how bad this "nerf" is before we start crying about it. Play with it some and just adjust your tactics.

If, for instance, all maxes became equal in power to the pounder... who would use anything else? A pounder can already mow through ranks like nothing else...

How do you beat a Pounder ricocheting nades off a wall through a door in a tower? Hmm? Most people carry 3-4 nades tops, and no way could you manage to even get close to the door to bounce one up there.

I dumped every max cert I had with the news of the "nurf". I can't stand whiners so I just moved on to something other then MAx certs.

Should have the option of "do nothing"

As much as everyone hates nerfs, it *does* give SOE a lot more flexibility going forward. No-nerf policies tie your hands badly. See a game like Asheron's Call -- due to constant twiddling with balance, and a no-nerf policy, character damage went through the roof, since everytime they adjusted one "group", they ended up going too far and having to boost everyone else as well. Wash, rinse, repeat...I think max sword damage at retail ship was 8-16, by the time I stopped playing well over a year ago, it was in the 25-45 ballpark...

There are lots of things I feel are overpowered, but I dont run to the forums and bitch about it because i got owned once or twice in a one on one fight.

Anyway, in response to Led. The MAX's should be feared, imo

But it looks like they are going full steam ahead on the Nerf train.

Woot! Woot! Next stop, Jackhamer! Woot! Woot! :ugh:

Bevis has the right idea for why to nerf (when needed) as opposed to just up it.

If you up the other two MAX's, now the infantry is lagging behind - better up them as well.

Oops, now tanks take too long to kill inf - beef 'em up.

Oh-oh, now airships are underpowered.

Etc

I think the idea is to "adjust" - up or down, as needed.

I'm not sure how powerful MAXs are, but if they are overpowered to a point of needing balancing, nerf 'em. Bringing other things up to par will either make the game into Halo or Ghost Recon (people take too much or too little to die).

Well to tell you the truth Why not nerf the TR maxs just a little and upgrade the others so the meet in the middle?

Technically it wasn't the damge output IMO. It was the fact you picked up the AV MAX and owned Infantry AND Vehicles, or picked up the AI MAX and owned everything within 75m. They toned them down to make them fit their specific roles better.

Why is it that MAXs "should" be feared, when any imbecile who has just logged into the game for the first time can Cert one?

If MAXs required the heavy weapon and reinforced certs first, THEN they could be something to truely fear. As it is, I see no compelling reason that MAXs should be able to kill infantry with impunity.

Here here, now there's a good point.

maxes being feared is fine. IF they are operating in their role. there's no reason a DC max should own anything that moves. the idea of ONE unit (pounder) holding off entire squads while he fires is lame. that isn't tactical in the least sense. it's just locking down and holding the mouse key.

granted, there are few things I enjoy in PS more then moving through a TR held tower while they have a couple maxes locked on each floor. the overpowering effect of these maxes has forced the smarter NC to adapt and we have.

instead of saying nerf you should say fix. or adjust. cos that's really what they're doing. whenever I think of the word "nerf" I think of an uneeded change. and these 2 changes to the DC and pounder are very needed.

to me a max should be the spearhed. and only the very tip. they should be the first through doors (besides thumpers) as they can soak a lot of damage. they should be feared when used correctly not as a zergtastic newb fest. a max should never be the backbone of a factions side, as it is with the TR.

and then you havn't even mentioned cert cost.

dc / pounder max: 3

how many certs does it take to effectively kill a max?

at the minimun 8 (exo, medium, special)

I look forward to monday when I can hammer down balanced TR maxes.

I love how people insist ont he term nerfing even though they havnt seen the affect, it could be rather marginal nothing really signifigant at all based on the devs data/coin flip. Basicly dont try and call it before it's landed.

I dont have a problem with having to fear max's max's kill me more then anything save probly TR armed with the chaingun (which they well should) This coming from a thumper/desolator guy. However there should be a difrence between rounding a doorway and having my pulse start pumping because I have to get my desolator out before the max can bead on me, and not even getting through the doorway because of a high speed stream of heavy grenade fire.

Here's a scenario I often see, 1 or more max's stake themselves down in a respawn room, any other factions max a respawning guy who has his wits around him whould at least have a prayer of getting throuugh the door and around the corner, not the terran though youll be dead in most cases before you've even cleared the tube, that i have a problem with.

if ur gonna spawn camp just stick the maxes body in front of the spawn tube so that no one can get out.

sometimes I'd let them squirm for a few seconds before gunning them down in the AI max.

it makes me giggle

In this case the 'nerf' is the proper solution. The NC/VS max kill infantry well enough(though the vs ai max needs a bigger clip). The TR AI pounder kills infantry significantly faster than either of them, to make matters worse it can kill multiple infantry at the same time and can do it in some situations without even having LOS. The TR DC max actually kills infantry unanchored as fast as the VS AI max and has a much larger clip so can kill more per clip, this obviously isn't the role the AV max was designed to fill so its dmg vs infantry is being reduced.

Hopefully there is a second round of max balancing. One that makes the TR DC max better vs vehicles, increases the clip sizes on the VS AV/AI max and does whatever NC max need(dont' use them so don't know).

As for a nerf, its a highly misused term. A nerf is a change to an item that reduces its power so much that it is rendered no longer useful. Unless they take this way too far this is simply a balancing decision not a nerf(though its posible the DC max will actually be nerfed after this, since its not so great vs vehicles).

Is at it stands right now (at least on jahari it seems) about 60-70% of TR force structure is constituted by MAX's. Call it skill call it whatever they just zerg everything with MAX's so naturaly their more then a little afraid of any changes to their bread and butter.

Well I have had this idea since open beta. They should get rid of the pounder and replace it with 50mm cannons and have that in the AV role while the DC was in AI role. Because the DC is useful both indoors and outdoors. While the cannons would pretty much only be useful outdoors.
