PC Gamer has been on a roll lately with PlanetSide 2 news. They sat down again with Matt Higby on classes where he revealed some new tidbits.
Higby demonstrates the classes themselves with the Infiltrator, a “spy-type character”. “You can really spec out in different ways, you can spec out this infiltrator to be a really sneaky gadgety, sabotage focused guy, or you could spec him to be more recon focused. And you’ll be able to say, hey this time when I get my loadout I’m going to bring my sniper rifles and a few gadgets and I’m going to be a very dedicated wilderness sniper character. But then next time you respawn you might say okay cool I’m going to bring a bunch of C4, I’m going to bring motion detectors and now I’m going to be a subterfuge/obfuscated kind of ghost recon character.”
He goes on to talk about the Engineer and Sidegrades as well as the training system. Higby also reveals he is leaning more towards the Terran Republic now with his new role on the team. Check out the full interview here.
They have also posted the PlanetSide 2 Preview that appeared in PC Gamer UK issue 232 on their website.
“Our mission system does two things really well. There’s a lot of people who want to play an FPS. They just click their high-imperative attack mission or important defend mission and pop, off they go. But these objectives are created by players. If you’re a commander, squad leader or even a guild leader, you can just place objectives in that mission system and people who aren’t interested in any of that leadership stuff will complete them.”

Re: New PC Gamer Interview Character Classes Detailed Snipers are already invisible. When you're a mile away shooting someone, your rifle won't counter snipe the guy effectively. All the cloaking does is allow the guy to get into position. I figured equipping the weapon and/or firing it will deactivate the cloak for a set period of time, which means you can fire once, pack up and move invisibly to another location, significantly dropping your rate of fire (which is already pretty slow for a sniper); OR, you can keep firing at will, in which case you have no cloaking at all and practically 0 armor (probably no shield, either). Relax with the knee-jerk reactions. You're shaking up my internets. |

Re: New PC Gamer Interview Character Classes Detailed Higby already said that cloaking between shots was too overpowered in playtesting, so if snipers to get any form of cloak, it certainly won't be complete invisibility. Anything else is pure speculation at this point, not that there's anything wrong with that. |

Re: New PC Gamer Interview Character Classes Detailed My interpretation of what he told us it that sniper and cloaker will be two of the available loadout options for the infiltrator class. To give a dedicated sniper class any significant level of cloaking would make them too difficult to hunt given that their preferred engagement range is so far, and that the field in this game is so large. |

Re: New PC Gamer Interview Character Classes Detailed I would like to cloak through a battlefield and get into position, then start firing, and if I'm found run from the incoming fire, get my cloak up after a timer, and move to another location. That'd be sweet. |

Re: New PC Gamer Interview Character Classes Detailed This game is in an early state of internal testing. I am sure there are TONS of outside the box things they are trying to see if they are fun.. no real reason to get bent out of shape about it. |

Re: New PC Gamer Interview Character Classes Detailed If it were a big involved thing to implement, I would question why they tested it as well. Considering it was probably pretty easy to toggle the option on and off, why not give a few iterations of cloaking snipers a test, just to check if any of them would be viable. Seems like a natural thing to do if you are putting cloakers and snipers into the same class. |
