Dev Chat with Lenny Gullo

The official site has up their next installment of devloper chats this time with Game Designer Lenny Gullo (@Kalyper on Twitter)

Currently, I’m kicking off design of a new continent. I’m making sure things go smoothly with development of key assets, defining that gameplay is fun and feels different, and of course making sure that it looks awesome. Look forward to it!

What's with all the love for Ceryshen? That was one of the most horribly unbearable continents in the game. I hope it doesn't return in PS2.

I'd like to see Amerish. Something with color. Please not another brown 'n bloom map like Ishundar or Searhus please. I'm so tired of boring brown dessert environments.

Ceryshen is to the other conts what Annwn is to the other caves. Both were designed very differently and as such are unique in their experience. They insure that gameplay does not become formulaic.

Just depends on your gameplay style. The huge elevation differences made Ceryshen a lot of fun for snipers and air vehicles playing cat and mouse games. As for it looking drab, I'd bet Forgelight will be able to do a very nice looking version of gray and desolate.

yeah, the atmospheric potential is immense with the new engine. Imagine cresting a hill in your mbt, and gazing at the Aurora Borealis as it lights up the northern horizon.

Indeed. Forge light is allowing us to do amazing things with the world. I wouldn't worry about it turning turning out bland or repetitive across continents. In fact, making sure the world is not boring in both looks and gameplay is high on my priority list. ~_^

Vurry nice! I would like something intense jungleish style warfare too or marshes like Hossin had.

That's awesome. Planetside 2 did have diverse continents, but it did sometimes start feeling repetitive.

Obviously art direction is one of the biggest parts of keeping them looking unique, but I'm curious how far the team is going. I know that time is valuable, but will each continent be mostly using it's own unique props for things like rocks, trees, etc? It's own texture pallet?

I'm sure tweaking Forgelights atmospheric effects to be unique to each environment will be an easy way to dial up the diverse look of a continent even further

Hey Kalyper, what kind of Particle effects are you working on? Do you think we will have things like mist or fog like one would find in a bog or tropical rain forest? What about wind?

I'm going to now start worrying about snow blindness and fresh snow reducing all sounds.
Also wondering about plasma + snow = steam.
Though that all might be a bit extreme.

One of the first things that new students are told is that everyone has a different idea of fun. The next thing is that the more trash talking that happens, the more fun the game is across the board.

Now, if I was to ask Mr. Gullo/Kalyper a question, it would be this: do we have to link supplies to bases to get the full benefit of these resources? If that's the case, then will bridges be especially contested along with high value terrain?

Thats a cool history. I bet there are many people like him who have bled their hearts out for a game they love (me included) that would kill for an opportunity like he got.

Anyways, good read, looking forward for a snowy cont to claim for NC's homecont even if there would officially be none

great to hear we'll be getting bridge battles again, some of those bridge to far crossings were simply AMAZING!

Imagine a swampy area, where if you ducked you where hidden under water lol. Could be some awesome ambushes there
