End of September News Roundup

Today is the first day of October and it was a very busy week to end out September! Monday was the PC Gamer PlanetSide 2 Preview, followed up on Tuesday by Comm-Link Art on the Official site. Wednesday we got a video of artist Patrick Ho building a Spawn Tube for the game as well as an interview. Thursday Matt Higby was interviewed by VideoGamer.com which revealed some interesting information, and Friday Massively posted an interview with Tramell Isaac as well as 3 new screenshots! Last but not least was the Twitter Developer interview which we have summarized here on PSU.

There was also various developer interactions both here, and on other websites. Higby dropped by PSU to clarify how the air vehicles will be in PlanetSide 2 and even revealed a new VS air vehicle called the Dyson.

Each empire has their own unique air fighter in PS2. The Reaver belongs to NC, the Mossy is TR. The VS have a new fighter that we're currently calling the Dyson, although that may change (and no, it's not powered by cyclone technology or a smarty-pants British accent).

Each has slightly different flight mechanics, strengths, weaknesses and capabilities which help to reinforce and round out the empire.

Each of these fighters will serve multiple roles depending on how the player loads out the vehicle, you can configure any of them to be more air-to-air orientated, air-to-ground orientated, etc. You'll be able to change out afterburners to get more speed, or armor to get more durability, countermeasures, radar dampening, etc. We're working on a lot of really cool gameplay here, I think you all will be stoked and I can't wait to share a bit more about them soon! =)

Higby also noted that he took this screenshot just the day before it was posted.

I actually took that screenshot yesterday running around reviewing an area on Indar... I ran up the stairs and it looked awesome so i snagged it - so yeah, that's definitely in game, in engine, and at playable frames per second.

Higby also dropped by Reddit and dropped a few tidbits.

We won't be as fast as BFBC2. We'll land somewhere between there and current Planetside for TTK. The overall pacing is a lot more than just TTK, though. Travel speed, speed to get into battles, % of downtime, etc. We want all that stuff a lot faster than PS1.

There will still be lots of opportunity for slower paced, less hectic gameplay, but in general we're going for a faster paced feel. Now, that doesn't mean we're making it anything like MW or UT - those are games we like a lot, but it's not Planetside and it never will be.

We're building everything in this game from the ground up with the pacing in mind, so any assumptions based on PS1 mechanics (i.e. infiltrators are screwed in a faster paced game because they don't have armor!) don't fly.

Discussion is hot on the forums as well the community discussing the new implementation of kill cams, the confirmation of the TR MAX Lock Down, and the new pace of combat. As always stay tuned to PlanetSide Universe for the latest news!

Eh, not liking the fact that instead of each empire having access to Mossie and Reaver, they made it empire specific. I'd much prefer ES variants of the Mossie and Reaver.

Meh, maybe with the customization the mossie/reaver will be able to fill the niche of the other aircraft, but I hope to god that the appearance changes dramatically so that if I have a Reaver as NC thats specced to be like the mosquito from PS1, that it actually looks like a mosquito and not the reaver.

Re: End of September News Roundup

Or maybe each of the empire specific vehicles will actually change the way people play, and make it a meaningful decision to play a certain empire if you are really into vehicles?

I love the idea. NC Reavers are going to be big, badass aircraft whether they are air-to-air or air-to-ground. Likewise, TR Mossies are going to be sleek and quick. However, their effectiveness can still be different but equal. Such as if the Mossy had a weaker chaingun while the Reaver has more powerful cannons. Or because of the speed different, the Reaver shoots a strong homing missile while the Mossy shoots more inaccurate cluster-rockets.

It was really cool how despite the same vehicle and attributes, the Deli variants had different weapons making them essentially different vehicles altogether. They're taking that concept and running with it, rather than giving all of the existing vehicles paintjobs. How many empire specific vehicles were even in PS?

Deli/Sundy variants
Assault buggies
Medium Tanks
BFRs

Can't think of any more. No planes, for certain.

Kinda pointless to talk about vehicles until we have a chance to drive them around. A rough estimate of when the beta would start would be useful.

Not really. The rough estimates we had in the past were poor at best. Until they finish the key features, no estimates will be given.

Well right now I have some feel for where I think they are in development. But a poor rough estimate from SOE would be better than nothing.

Straws, what key features do you think aren't finished?

Anything I would say would be heresey. I am not on the development team, so I don't even know the full least of features, but to put it this way, if all the features were already in game, then beta would be out, because after implimentation comes balancing, balancing requires more than an internal testing team of X emplyees.

Examples of what could be in the process of implimentation are the mechanics of vehicle aquisition. Base-capture methods may not be in yet. The mechnics behind territory capture may not be in yet.

Don't confuse concept and design with development and implimentation.

Back to the subject of being told when beta will be out, please note that from various interviews in November 2010, PS2 was going to be released in March 2011. The silence we had leading up to that date, as well as the lack of achievement on that date really pissed a lot of people off. Higby's approach is refreshing and professional. I hope it stays that way.

Re: End of September News Roundup

didn´t smed say in an interview that beta is planned for the end of the year or early next year?
that´s the closest guess we will get for some time.

but i like the overall frequency of q&as, news and interwiews we are getting now!
and i love that the devs show us, they are listening to our feedback! as when someone complained about the cloaking atv being cut and highby answered that he will have the team work out a cloaking attachment for the atv, to satisfy the cloakers that need this feature for their beloved playstyle.
