Higby Clarifies Cash Shop

Matt took some time over at Reddit to clarify how the cash shop will function.

I've addressed this a few times in interviews in the past, but here's the basic gist. Planetside 2 has three fundamental types of items:

Power adding items - items such as grandes, med kits, certain types of implants (like a run speed booster), these items fundamentally alter player power and are acquired exclusively with resources earned in game

Playstyle items - these are sidegrades for vehicles and weapons, these switch up playstyle, and as much as possible are balanced against one-another to not add absolute power. These are available for Resources earned in game or Station Cash.

Non-gameplay affecting items - things like cosmetic skins, resource or xp boosts, etc. These don't have any impact on moment-to-moment gameplay and therefore player power and are available for Station Cash

So, as you can see, anything that gives any gameplay impact of any kind is always going to be available through gameplay. You wont be able to unlock a gameplay affecting item exclusively for Station Cash, there will be an in-game acquisition path as well, you're just bypassing (or shortcutting) it by using Station Cash.

Additionally, none of our item sidegrades really give a discrete power advantage, and those items which do (such as grenades, etc) are available exclusively for in-game resources. So, while you can unlock different playstyle choices with Station Cash, you're not really buying an advantage overall, you're just unlocking different situational breadth.

Head on over to the comments to discuss.

I'm glad that non-gameplay items will still be available for unlock with in-game resources.

What I am reading here:

Power adding items - these items alter player power and are acquired with resources

Non-gameplay affecting items - resource boosts, are available for Cash
So, Power = Resources = Cash
I think we just crossed a very significant line.

Edit: Never mind, just caught the "resource boost" bought by cash part.

Nice catch... that sure does make me wonder.

Certainly the biggest risk of "buying power" we have officially seen, but it really depends on how resources work, what kind or resources can be boosted, etc.

If you can collect a huge pool of resources while offline and use it to spam grenades, you've just bought a substantial amount of power. If you can gain a small boost to your resources that will quickly disappear if your empire doesn't have access to that type or resource, you've bought a small advantage that will probably amount to little more than the advantage of getting a sidegrade weapon slightly quicker with cash than earning it in game.

Still, one way or another, it does seem to be buying power. Hopefully it gets change, clarified or ends up being inconsequential.

This is exactly how it works in league of legends, and league works fine in that regard.

Cash = IP boost = runes / champions.

Wouldn't using boosted in game resources to buy things like grenades be more analogous to buying upgrade items with earned gold in the middle of a match in LoL?

*sigh*

Beta can't come soon enough so that we can just see the stuff in action and comment from experience. The devs seem receptive enough to community concerns and making important changes.

All the more reason to just work with what info we have in the meanwhile and not flip out too bad until we get hands on or hear something truly fucked up.

The strongest gun in the game doesn't (shouldn't) do anything if you can't aim. In league you just have to right click on the enemies and you make use of the stuff you've bought indirectly with cash.

Plus, you can spend the IP you got with your IP boost on runes that give you more gold in game.

I hate to say it, but in order to make up the lost income from removing cash-only items, they probably just lowered the ceiling for the resources you can hold for your character. Just throwin' that out there...

Cool, nice to see specifics on the cash store. I was hoping we'd essentially be able to buy "vehicle variants" with real cash -- awesome!

Now one thing I have not yet heard or seen about is the numbers of resources weapons and armour will cost, as well as the amount of time it will take to say collect enough resources to buy a specific item

Re: Some Info about Items from the Shop

I'm curious how much of a grind it is going to be to unlock things that you can buy. Will it be so much of a grind you'll wonder what you're doing with your life that you may as well just fork over cash? Then again they'll probably sale boosts to alleviate that. Ugh gaming these days.

That's not at all what I meant and I think you know that.
