Massively PAX East Interview

Massively has posted up their Q&A with Matt Higby from PAX East!

We asked about the touchy subject of "deathcams," i.e., the instant replay that shows just how you died. The issue we had is that of a sniper's perspective, as a deathcam replay might reveal a hidden location and instantly compromise it.

Higby said that the deathcam seen at GDC wasn't anything like the one that's actually going in the game. It won't directly expose hiding locations but will instead show exactly how you died: weapon used, damage numbers, and the like.

Also in the interview Matt said to stay tuned for E3 2012.

We couldn't resist asking when we'll be able to get our hands on a beta -- or the launch. "When it's... awesome," Higby laughed. He told us to keep our eyes on E3, which should be a big time for the game.

Sounds like an exciting few months ahead! We will be there every step of the way, click here for the full interview.

Well, it may not be beta but I hope they have playable demos. Just wish I could go now.

Competitors are rushing to mine this largely untouched market.
Dust 514 isn't really enough to blow the market open...and are Firefall and Heroes and Generals even going to be persistent world MMOFPSs?

And aside from them are there any other games coming that even come close to deserving the "MMOFPS" designation?

He also fought back against people who say that MMOs are played out and have no innovation left to them; on the contrary, Higby believes the real innovation is yet to come.
I agree with this. MMORPG is NOT the same as MMOFPS. There is a HELL of a lot of room for MMOFPS innovation.

I still think Blizzards mmo nicknamed "Titan" will be some kind of shooter. It's the only genre Blizzard isn't in, yeah activision is but mmos are Bliz's forte. I thought they'd make something like FireFall, or Planetside.
off topic

This article is also awesome. But after watching that curse interview I expect every article to have a PSU nod now.

Depending on who you believe, all we really know is that the game is "casual". To be honest, I don't see how that can mean a persistent world MMOFPS...unless it has MW3 mechanics and fluffy bunnies!

Indeed. If beta isn't announced at E3 I don't feel like we'll see it for a while.

i dunno, maybe they can do something with it and they still plan to have beta go on for sometime, but an NDA drop when the game IMO is still in an alpha stage is a bad sign.

Liking the amount of media coverage!

As for Firefall, one has to remember that it's perhaps the only game the last few years that is actually a beta instead of a marketing plot. If they manage to keep up the work (fundingwise and everything else wise), I think Firefall will be a fairly big title one day. As for whether it was a good idea to lift the NDA, I really don't know. The game has so little content at the moment that lifting it now may push people away and not really look back, but I think Firefall can have a succesful future.

I've personally enjoyed playing the little content the game offers with some clanmates, even if it's not really my kinda game (I hate Tribes, I guess that tells enough).

Supposedly (seen in some videos, hearsay, rumors, etc ) they have more content available, but it's not in the beta yet as they want to gate the testable features so that those few things get ironed out first before they add new stuff.
