I'm a little disappointed with the way they're making this free. "Oh look, we have a brand new free game out but you must still have paid a subscription fee or have had an account on the new game AT AN EARLIER DATE to play it. We can't help it if you got your new comp later and couldn't be bothered to make an account for a game you couldn't even play before to play this older game.

So... Yea. That.

It's not like everyone's going to flood the PS1 servers with the bad coding. I'd sure play it but most people can't handle the older graphics and longer respawn/weapon switching times because everything has to be fast these days.

Following that logic (which is most likely accurate) I really don't see a reason why PS1 isn't free for EVERYONE when PS2 has no subscription fee.

Simply because subscription is the only income in ps1 and SOE is a business. In order to make PS1 F2p permanently, they would need to recode it to offer ways of alternative income.

Which would be a very bad thing. Would anyone here actually want to see SOE change Planetside into a self-sustaining F2P game, with all that entails?

That's just it. PS1's time has (more or less) passed. Let's be honest, the only income coming in is from the vets who I'm sure would be happy to make donations anyway.

My main gripe isn't the limited free time but the fact that it's not "free" unless you already made an account on PS2 at an earlier date. It's like saying "You didn't care enough about our PS2 game to make an account sooner so that means you don't care enough about our game and we're going to punish you for it by not letting you play now."

They could include the PS1 sub for people who purchased premium time for PS2 for starters.
Or just give every freshly made PS2 account also 6 free months of PS1.

Exactly. that's exactly my point. Either aim it at people that pay or everyone. Not a messy middle ground that only favors half of the people on one side of the fence.

Why would you want to play PS1 when PS2 is 100 times better. Just let it die. If SOE wants to satisfy players of old games the bring back SWG Pre-CU.

Blackdog, did you play PS1? Do you know the differences between PS1 and PS2? For one, PS1 did not use the free-to-play model. That makes a large difference in how the certification and inventory systems between the two games are done. There are no pre-built classes in PS1. There's more continents, homes continents with sanctuaries, and an inter-continent lattice with continent locking in PS1.

The base capture mechanics and many other meta-game elements are better developed in PS1 then PS2 atm as well... There's more vehicles in PS1 and the spawn mechanics are very different.
