John Ratcliff was one of the original developers on PlanetSide. He is likley responsible for all the old shots of the famed purple buildings that never made it into final release. A couple of years back he put together a very interesting blog entry covering the game from it's infancy all the way up until release.
I designed the entire client side game engine myself and I had a lot of fun during the development process. One of my regrets is that, in many respects, the final game did not look nearly as visually impressive as it did at certain points during development. There were a number of reasons for this.
There's also a bunch of old screenshots on his blog that show the game in all phases of engine development. At some point there were even NPC's in the game. Imagine driving your Prowler through the countryside and running down some dinosaur looking beast?
Head on over to his blog to check out all of the screenshots and a brief description of each, it's a very interesting read into the development of the original PlanetSide.
Update: Additionally DviddLeff on the forums uncovered some of Brett Brileys work on his website. He did some work on PlanetSide as well as Core Combat.

Re: PlanetSide Developer Blog It's a good read, I found myself last year when I was putting together my PUP. I also found this: http://www.bbriley.com/index.php?section=3d_planetside Designer of all the PS models. |

Re: PlanetSide Developer Blog Yea I know it's been around for a bit, figured now is as good a time as any to highlight it. And nice find on Briley's page - he used to spend allot of time here at PSU. http://www.planetside-universe.com/f...mber.php?u=209 |

Re: PlanetSide Developer Blog Cool read. I hadn't seen it before. The terrain shots were really spectacular. It really makes me wonder how good the terrain might look in PS:N. (I'll still turn off the grass as an option because it was easier to see the baddies) |

Re: PlanetSide Developer Blog Yeah I can imagine. I hope that once we see the sequel to Planetside released that it will emerge a similar blog post. Would be interesting to see what ideas they had that they scratched off the board. |

Re: PlanetSide Developer Blog
And that purple tower you see on some screenys was ment to be the location you spawn from. You then had to run to your nearest base to get equipment. That stuff told me an alpha tester weeks ago. And yea, i want to know what stuff was tried during PSN development and then removed. Always nice to read what ideas failed for whatever reason. |

Re: PlanetSide Developer Blog Orbital Stations were meant to be in, which you got the HART ship to, got into the drop pod and then hit the atmosphere. Would have been cool, but a bit of a waste of time/loading screens unless there could be combat on them... |

Re: PlanetSide Developer Blog
Too bad we couldn't have an outfit cruiser like the HART. Or use it as an orbital platform. |
