Reddit Q&A Summary

Today Matt Higby began a Q&A over on Reddit answering community questions. We have summarized the Q&A here and will continue to update it.

Q: There has been a lot of concern over the "cash" shop if you will and one thing you've always said is you won't be able to buy power, but "convenience" items are on the table. I'm almost more worried about that because what that seems like to me is faster respawn, lower timers, things like that.

A: for me, "power" means i'm buying something that when I stand toe to toe with you gives me an advantage that you don't have. I have more health so it takes you longer to kill me, I have more bullets so I don't have to reload as often, etc.

While faster respawn times or my ability to acquire resources faster are, from a certain point of view, increasing my power it doesn't affect my ability to kill you and your ability to kill me, so, to me isn't "buying power". Now, if your entire empire buys a theoretical implant that lets you respawn faster, your empire has a power advantage because they spend less time dead, but that's a kind of abstract view of things and kind of unrealistic. In reality, you're personally trading money for time - buying convenience, and that, in my book, is okay. I'm positive this will spark debate, and I'm looking forward to reading it!

I used to run over Vanu MAX armors in MID AIR. Nothing, I mean NOTHING, can stop a Galaxy with full afterburners engaged apart from an entire regiment of anti air rockets.

..... I had a full load of passengers at the time of the impact too.... they felt a very very large bump in mid flight.

Skitrel So where's this write up of everything that was said? I intended on doing this originally as it was going on but held back because it appeared covered. Bit flakey. I'd do it now but im away for several days. It's not particularly possible through my phone.

I think this guy's on to something...

A: We may have to institute a cool down on MAXes although we don't have one at the moment... like many things we're going to really see where the rubber meets the road once we get to betA:
Right now turrets can be placed virtually anywhere, but some restrictions may be added if we find it being heavily exploited in betA:
A: once we're reasonably sure that we won't do any character wipes we might unlock commerce during betA:

That's pretty coincidental that the only letters that were randomly capitalized happen to be in the word BetA.

Just wanted to chime in and say thanks for picking my question for the cover, if you will, of the Q&A Summary(The convenience item question).

I thought it deserved a little more attention as it didn't receive much on Reddit and I think it's something people need to think about and discuss during beta to make sure it's implemented properly.

The reason why no one asked about a update on the Pro7 deal is because we all know the answer already. Its the exact same as with the beta question: They tell us once they can.

They asked something similar but you cant expect any answer from Higby. Decisions about this are on different level than he is.

Aye Matt has no control over that subject and probably really isn't involved in the discussions at all.

Re: Higby Ama on reddit

The more I learn about this game, the more nervous I am becoming.

More and more it sounds like they've been taking steps backward rather than forwards in both design and ambition with this new release. As far as I can tell, there are fewer continents, fewer facilities, and fewer vehicles. Loadouts have been limited, so that's no longer up to the creativity and preference of the player to choose what they carry; they just pick a 'kit' and have to work with what they have in that kit. You can't be a heavy weapons guy who doubles as a medic. It's verbotten in the New Planetside.

If it weren't for the updated graphics I would think this was a design document that had been given a few more years to bake before it was released as PS1.

I'm also really, really nervous at just how much is being cribbed from Battlefield. I mean, look, I know Higby likes the Battlefield games. I liked Bad Company 2. Thing is, if I wanna play Battlefield, I can just play that; and I imagine people who are in the market for Battlefield games probably feel the same way. SOE seems to be hoping that the 'mmofps' appeal will carry Planetside 2 pretty much all on its own; if it didn't have that feature, it sounds like someone could reasonably confuse PS2 with a really elaborate Battlefield mod.

This game seems really low on the innovation, and really high on the imitation. Factor in all the corners they have to cut in order to wrap it all in a nice glossy next-gen bundle and what we're left with is a sequel that will launch as HALF the game the original was when IT launched.

I loved Planetside. I played it more than pretty much anyone. I've been drooling over the possibility of a sequel. But the more I learn about PS2, the more that drool is drying up, and being replaced with a really uneasy feeling...

Hmm.. I guess many people in this forum are feeling in the same way with you for now, too.

And about fewer continents. Sad but understandable, just compare the Daggerfall's world map to that of Skyrim. Empire foothold is more serious issue we're dealling with currently, more so than the small number of continents at launch.

Can you please tell me more about voip ?
Thanks

I relate to 2142, because thats what I'm familiar with. In BF2142 squadmates could talk to eachother and squad leaders and commanders could talk on a second voip channel. Has PS2 at least got squad voip ? (and can you set it as push to talk client side)
