Several things.
Giant Goddam Tanks, like a battleship only with treads instead of a hull. A full squad to crew the thing. Mortars, point defenses, missile batteries, and some big honkin cannons. Destroyable fortifications that actually protect the defenders well (until they're finally destroyed). And can be rebuilt by engineers. Blood. If the poor bastard next to me takes a 150mm shell in the face, I should be covered in gloppy red chunks. Bullet Penetration. The aforementioned 150mm shell should keep going. Prone. Make all those decorative-in-PS1 base consoles actually DO STUFF. Security feeds, tactical displays THAT WORK and help the base commander direct the battle, etc, etc. Maybe manually-activated base alarms can cue the mission generation system. |

Proper BFR-sized mechs. I wrote about this a long while ago, but if they're more heavily armored, slower and more powerfully armed than tanks, and have no shields then they will have a proper place on the battlefield as territory defense. Air, tanks and infantry gain ground, mechs advance behind them and make sure it stays taken.
Alone, a mech should easily be outclassed by more maneuverable vehicles and air. Jump packs will be fine for single-pilot mechs, but they shouldn't allow as much mobility as the jet packs from PS1. Just the ability to hop to a more advantageous position every once in a while. Two-man mechs should feature similar or identical secondary weapons as tanks. Anti-air should either be absent or comparably weak. Shields borked them in the first game so they should be out. I'm undecided as to locational damage. |
