I just read this article that says that when Smed had been talking about PS:Next (when they were still calling it that) he was referring to a graphics update to the existing Planetside.
http://www.shacknews.com/article/692...riginally-just Given that we were essentially told that beta invites would go out to current subscribers or that we were going to receive an official announcement for PS:N in March (depending on how you interpreted his cryptic tweets), I'm beginning to doubt the information we've got as to how far along PS2 actually is. The article I linked talks about SOE's desire for transparency, which I take to mean disclosure of accurate information. It also says that PS2 is at a very early stage of development, which seems contradictory to the game they were talking about in the dev panel. Who's misinformed? Shacknews or us? They said in a few weeks we'll be asking them why they even showed that trailer, so I'm going to go with they're a bit further ahead than not.
Good news is once they get a whole cont completed and most of the gameplay nailed down they can start testing core combat. |

Being early in development doesn't seem contradictory at all, in fact it seems rather likely.
If you remember the first time around we had screenshots that looked nearly nothing like the final game.

Well I do feel a little relieved to hear that they are multi-purposing the light forge engine to be used in both PS2 and EQ:Next...
A pretty common gripe that I used to hear years ago was that they were siphoning cash out of PS to EQ. If development money goes towards the EQ side of the engine there maybe be a trickle down effect to PS2. That is something I take a little solace in. |

I was under the impression that they would have had the project fairly well along in order for Smed to be making tweets about beta back at the beginning of the year. Isn't that a fair assumption to make? |

When he was tweeting about beta and launch I believe he was still refering to the graphical update of Planetside that this started out as. This has since then evolved into a full fledged sequel and not just a graphical update.
Which honestly I am quite happy about even if it means that we get to wait longer. |

It was ment to be a graphic update years ago when planetsides dev team went missing. It propably became planetside 2 when smed tweeted ' planetside next you will like'
A graphics update for the old one would have required a new engine, and I guess they wanted to use u3 for that. |

its obvious they have had a fair amount of the game done already.
as we have already seen the follow vehicles: galaxy - ingame magrider- ingame vanguard - render(that was 6 months ago, prolly ingame now) skeeter - ingame reaver - render (again 6 months ago) out of 20 guns we have seen the following ingame: repeater cycler bolt driver pulsar gauss possible second NC rifle they also said they have 2 tower designs. so they have done abit, im sure they have more in there than that. we know some of these renders, it looks like in their 3D engine were done 6 months ago, i imagine the process of getting them into the game is pretty quick from there. and like we have always said, planetside has no content, the development time now that the engine is done, should be rather short and we have already seen 1/3rd of there weapons/vehicles ingame. |

I think there was a reaver flying by in the trailer at one point.
Can't check right now though as I'm at work and youtube is disabled. Can someone take a look? I think some infantry were firing their weapons and the reaver dived in from the right |

One of the TR blokes is holding it in the trailer.
Doesn't look like a bolt driver tho - it has a magazine, so it's probably a semi-auto sniper rifle of sorts.
