Great responses all.
I can not wait to see a moonless night (and yes I know how bright our moon makes it, I live on a road without street lights and have been checking out Mars, the Moon, Jupiter and Venus the past few nights ) |

Dont forget i think theyre implimenting a weather system aswell. So hopefully there will be situations like, overcast cloud cover, with rain, at night. Meaning that it is a huge pain in the bottom, and night vision scopes and heat sensors really come into play.
Even Minecraft, whos entire gameplay was based around you being terrorfied of the dark, changed its lighting so you can actually see. So i wouldnt hold out hope for an FPS with 1000's of people playing at once, us all tripping over rocks and fumbling in bushes to please a few people. I think the weather system will add more strategy than the night cycle. Waiting for a sand storm to roll into a base so you can attack under that cover is more interesting to me, although not as regular. |

hopefully they'll make Auraxis have several moons or maybe even a binary star, something so they can pretty much randomly fuck around with brightness, then we'll have dark bits and light bits and not so dark bits or not so light bits :P
Essentially i hope they make it so the timings vary, i.e if you play at 8-9 pm every night it would be annoying to always be in the dark etc

If you can't effectively play the game then it is too dark. If it's so dark you have to move continents or stop playing altogether, then they've made a mistake. There's a difference between adding atmosphere to a game and modifying the gameplay slightly, and shutting down gameplay because nobody can see what's going on anymore. That's all there is to say about it.

If you go and pause at 5:10 you will see it is almost pitch black. It get's brighter because of the moon being full.

This means that canyons and mountain areas will be very dark but the actual night still needs to be a bit dark IMO. |

I didn't think night time looked dark enough either.
However as much as I'd like to see things get darker I believe it might create a balance issue with night vision/thermal scopes. I'm going on the assumption that night vision scopes/impants would not immediately be available to everyone. So n00b player 1 would not have the scope and would be raped by 5 year veteran player that has IRNV on every weapon and vehicle. The only way I see it to make night time useful would be to remove night vision/thermal scopes from the game. |

No it doesn't. They intend on having weather in game, clouds are actually going to cast shadows, all that light you're seeing is coming from the moon as the light-source. Get a nice cloudy night and it's going to be pitch black, all night.
