PlanetSide 2 Horrible Performance on Linux (Wine)

So contrary to popular belief, it IS very possible to get PS2 to run with Wine. I did it.

Installed vcrun2008, corefonts, d3dx9_43 and d3dcompiler_43 with winetricks.
Set LaunchPad.exe to run under Windows XP mode.

It installs and runs, however, it's not playable because of low FPS problems. The game literally plays at about 5 FPS.

My rig info:
OS: OpenSUSE 12.1
VGA: NVidia GTX460 with Proper NVidia Drivers
RAM: 16GB
CPU: AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor

Anyone else had the same experience?

This is only a experiment or are you actually going to not install Windows to properly play the game?

I haven't booted Windows on my main rig in 5 years.

So no, it's not just an experiment. I haven't played windows games "properly" in 5 years :P

Currently I have installed:

Guild Wars
Guild Wars 2
Borderlands
StarCraft
Mass Effect 2

After a little bit of tweaking, there's little to no performance difference from native windows and Wine. PlayOnLinux is also a pretty helpful tool for getting these games working well. Winetricks is a must. A little bit of patience and know how and you can pretty much get any game working well in Wine. Planetside has been one of the most challenging so far :P

Oh, the Wine database is pretty useful too. It's really helpful to find what windows settings and dependencies are needed for getting win apps to run nicely on Wine.

Interesting. Looking forward to see how much you can bring the performance up.

There's a good chance WINE is spewing out huge amounts of log messages about what we do on the graphics side.

And sir, hats off to you and your dedication!

as a linux-junkie myself i can comfirm wine is a great deal when it comes to (windows)gaming on linux.

However... keep in mind your are running a BETA version of the team. Proble many fixes and performance issue's have to be addressed. I recon, with a decent pc, and couple months op patiens we'll be able to play PS2 on linux. But i don't think the time/game is ready for it yet.

How do we play. I can hop on mine and try to get it working also. I've played the game since withing the first year of launch. don't we get auto access for that at this point?

My Games storage HDD that is windows/linux is out atm. The one thing I can do it do a pure linux game while I wait for my HDD to arrive.

it would be nice if ps2 ran on linux. i wouldn't need to boot windows ever again. i'm currently dual booting mint and win8 atm. i had a ton of issues getting ubuntu 12 to play nice. i rarely had any trouble with ubuntu 10. 12 running on my amd box has been a nightmare to get working. the main ubuntu unity interface on gnome needs a lot of work. i had trouble getting mint working as well but finally was able to update and not have the whole system take a dump on me. so i'm gonna stick with that for a long time. my network wasn't working due to buffer bloat i think. then i had some video driver issues where the driver kept getting corrupted due to updates. which was very frustrating. if you have an amd system though i'd recommend mint cinnamon seems to work. keep your video drivers handy cause the first major update after you install will possibly hose your video driver and you won't have a task bar. that was what i ran into though last night. was a good learning experience but man i don't wanna deal with that frustration anytime soon again lol. the gui on mint cinnamon though is very nice. very win2k like.

it will be in interesting to see if soe pushes linux. being f2p and with steam beta testing a new linux client it's very possible that gaming could start to lean a bit towards linux in the next few years.
