I am one of the last 32 bit System players of PS2, and i think this is a GOOD move.
They never managed to get the game running crash free on a 32 Bit system, and they probably never will. The 3 GB effective ram you can use with a 32 Bit system is just not enough for PS2. I always thought that if they could not stop the crashing on 32 Bit they should take the honest route and raise the minimum requirements. Switching to 64 Bit only will in essence do that, AND it should improve stability and performance for the 94% that are already on a 64 Bit system. I guess that they will still support DX9 for a while, but depending on what the PS4 uses internally ( Anyone knows? Afaik its AMD hardware should be way past the DX9 era, and might encourage Mantle support for PS2 on PC... ) i would not be surprised if in a year or two they switch to DX10/Dx11 only. After all, PS2 is a demanding game. No other game so far does what it does. Now the question that remains is if i will be able to gather the money for a new system first, or the 64 Bit switch will come first. Given the speed that SOE works at, i think my chances of being faster are pretty good. |

Again I have to wonder why SOE thought it was a good business plan to develop an engine with 32 in mind. What market could have warranted that?
The sooner game companies stop supporting 32 the better, imo. Not that PS2 will probably benefit hugely from 64 support. Just the principal of designing an engine like Forgelight around modern hardware, instead of the previous generation.

Why is BF-3 Older then PS-2 and it is DX-10-11/64bits only! Also planetside requires 4 GB to run properly. I think they should keep DX 9 alive, because of some laptop players, people with windows XP and older rigs. But after reading this: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ance,2793.html Really makes me thing that DX11/64 bits will increase performance more them the OMFG patch 1!

Historically 64 bit programs have rarely ever been faster than their 32 bit counterparts of the same software. But stability-wise it sounds like he's convinced its worth convincing the 6% to upgrade or bid them GG.
I'd guess they made the 32 bit version because they didn't know how few people would end up running 32 bit. Seems like a good move and less people affected than when they moved EQ1 up a DirectX version and gave refunds to quite a few people. Ironically they probably haven't updated those graphics since. |

Good move in the long run. However I wouldn't expect miraculous performance increases, smooth FPS and all that gubbins for everyone. At least it may help fix the memory crashing. Last edited by CrimsonTemplar; 2014-02-05 at 07:20 AM. |

I think the biggest thing it may help is hitching since so much more game content can be loaded into memory. Particularly helpful when zerging along lattice lines where the game can pre-load off disk as you go but jumping around across a cont or from cont to cont it wont help so much.

And of course this would also be impacted by the meory on your card and the amount of RAM in the PC, I'd assume the management of this data wiould be done by graphics drivers+the OS itself. Along with this, 32bit PC would never (I'd hope) have more than 4Gb memory anyway. |

Their "Forgelight" engine was started back in what... 2010? Back then 64-bit/DX11-only would have been laughed at. (Still reeling from Vista and years and years of non-existant 64-bit benefits).
A sucky thing to have to do, but yeah, 64-bit and DX11 will help PS2 in a deck of cards (sp_a_des can't be said?) (as long as it's given proper time to be coded... correctly!) Last edited by Edfishy; 2014-02-05 at 05:12 PM. |

I don´t think any of you guys has checked:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...ance,2793.html That I posted some time ago. With a game where 50+ players are using different weapons and armors, 64 bits is a must have. We are probability going to have the phoenix range increase to 400m, it could me more, but it will break balance. And the performance increase on my 5870 with dx-11 it is magical!
