Its a long one, and its not mine:
Initially I intended to make a long post/rant/whatever regarding the state of Spear vs LW, but its way too late and frankly I had one too many Guinness. So just as you regret drunken answering-machine messages to your ex's I'm sure I'll regret this post sometime in the near future. (Whether for its content or complete lacktherof). Basically to kick it off, I started as a LW Hero (Sylvan, if you must know, and proud) and somewhere along the way I decided that style was more important than functionality. So at 40th level I respec'd into my current: 50 CSp 42 Shield 39 Parry 6 Blades - despite various warnings, outcries, protests and pickits by my various mates. Now here comes the kicker. By learning my styles (4/5 I use in RvR) and also mastering the shield/weapon swap (thats in combat, between swings swaps) I've found myself much more effective than nearly any LW hero I have met. Despite being a sylvan (dubious strength and parentage, and we're slow to boot) and a spearo, I deal a massive amount of damage, and have much more control capability (see, Hunters Boon/Slam) than my LW friends. The current trend amoung most LW users is the very done and very lazy "Get into combat and spam annihilation" while this style does do qutie a bit of damage, and has a nifty 9 second stun attached, it isn't be all end all of RvR. I run in an 8 person 'gank' group, mostly melee focus'd and am one of two rotating spearos, along with quite a few LW users and even crazy s/s'er. What I have found in combat is that after the first 20 or so seconds of battle everyone is already sporting a stun immunity timer - this is where hunters boon really shines. Basically us Spearo's have our only little prevent flight, only it takes a measure of skill and timing to use, and hits quite alot more often. This style has a solid growth rate, coupled with a very nice snare effect and is vastly underrated. While I still retain a 9 second stun (anytime with shield) I also have a great rear positional snare, which does in fact not sport any sort of immunity timer. Couple this style with Dragon Claw (Side based, solid damage/growth style) And you have a potentially devasating combination of attacks. This is something vastly overlooked by the current population of players, who seem to enjoy putting up 1 or 2 styles and spamming them, hoping for landings (and often cancelling their own moves). Anyhaps, now that this post as become incredibly long - I'd like to hear the input of other spearos and lw users...which weapon do you think offers more control? Which has more style? (This one is obvious) If you're curious about which weapons I use, currently I'm sporting an MP exceptional, but more often that oh-so-sexy prince-drop spear that makes you ALMOST feel like you're an armsman. My RA's consist of the usual det/ip/purge but I've also invested in mopain2, soon to be 3. With a 5.7 spear and a 15% crit chance you really do deal a high end damage, regardless of what the naysayers...say. Donnerjack Briarborne Vox Imperium Hero of Percival
