Now before you jump to conclusions about me not posting on these forums much and not knowing what im presenting, let me say this - ive been playing planetside for over a year and im very active in my outfit forums. I do look over these forums alot although i hardly replay.
Ok for the past month or two i have been building and designing this boat with the same programs that i also used to make a replica of the lightning. I used AutoCad to do all the designing and drawing. I used 3d Studios to color it and add enviroment. I did most of the designing my self with a few ideas from my friend and former outfit leader NemesisOrion (SeriousSoldier). The 12mm chain guns The 75mm cannon The flack gun The controls for the 75mm cannon and 12mm chain guns The controls for the boat itself. Ok the boat should have a CR5 to pilot it. It has a CC on the top level with the boat controls. If you find an empty boat or if you can aquire control of the top level an adv hacker can hack it, you will need to hold the hack for 2 minutes and the boat becomes yours. But only a CR5 can pilot it. The boat has a dual 75mm cannon from the lightning and sunderer on the front. It has two 12mm chain guns on the back of the boat. It also has dual flack cannon on the back (borrowed from the skygaurd) to deal with aircraft. The 75mm cannon and the 12mm chain guns both have gunner spots on the level beneath them. A person can get in the gunner spots on the level it is on. The fronts of the 75mm cannon and 12mm cannon have small camera eyes on them, which relays the signals down to the screens in the gunner spot. On the bottom level of the boat there are two equipment terminals, lockers, and one medical terminal. The boat overall has 1 damage meter, the boat has the armor of two vanguards. Engineers can repair the boat from anywhere. The boat has no limit of people that can be on it, but the more people on it, the slower it goes. Ok now im proposing that if this some how gets excepted into the game that there is an expansion of another base per continent. It will be a harbor, where the boats can be purchased. There should be one or two warpgates in the water per continent for the boat to get from continent to continent. Here are screen shots of it from autocad. A view of the bottom level. A view of the middle level. A view of the top level. Some other autocad views |

I like it overall, it could be a bit sleeker, but overall very nice. However, it seems fairly undergunned, I'd make the Deck gun the Empire tank gun and save the 75 for something like a PT boat, and jump the twelves to 25mms. Use this as the mid-level utility/escort vehicle and add a big gun cruiser thats vulnerable to the lighter PT boats, subs, aircraft, ect. but is neccessary to slug it out with other cruisers and shore defenses. Scatter around bases on small islands, no aircraft carriers, some sort of troop ship/ams and god damn my post is going way further then I wanted it too.

"There isn't enough water"...
Has anyone noticed the fact that every single "continent" is a giant island? And has anyone bothered to look up the word "island" in the dictionary? It isn't exactly a desert wasteland, unless your name is Australia. For something that large, it could be difficult to figure a use for. You need to scale it down a few sizes. Even our biggest vehicles are very simple and don't have running-around room. You also overlook a key factor in multi-person vehicles - there isn't moving-around room. Example, the Galaxy. It's essentially a stowage bin. You have a pilot, and you have three gunners. The gunners get into position outside the bird and upon entering, are automatically transferred to a gun-camera view. The guys in the vehicle get in and are transferred to a tail-area camera, along with the guys who board as passengers. They aren't free to move about the cabin and the captain did not turn off the remove seatbelts light. I believe this would work without adding a "water continent". It would especially come in handy on Cyssor and the Battle Islands, especially if the Battle Islands were linked without having to go from zone to zone via a warpgate. I think there are areas on Hossin where it's possible to get one "inland". One - aquatic warpgates. Essentially, slap a warpgate out in the water offshore and remove the power-loss zone so you can get there without running out of NTUs or gas or whatever. Motor through the beam and you're there. Two - make naval combat feasible. Hell, even right now it's feasible to sit offshore and shell shore bases. And the fact that Magriders run out to the water to save their asses or engage targets validates the fact that it is a feasible "expansion". But I digress. Three - your boat. Retool it slightly. Reduce the design by eliminating the running-around areas, since Planetside doesn't use that feature (yet). In other words, it shouldn't be like the landing craft in BF1942. When you get alongside the vessel, there's a series of dots like every other vehicle. You get on a position and there you go. You can configure the weapons positions like the BFRs, or make empire variants like the Deliverers. I know for a fact that this would come in handy among players that use strategy and support. Especially if you have some heavy firepower that can be used as long-range bombardment. Naval gunfire historically has a precedence of being used mainly to support ground-based combat actions, such as a battleship's 16-inch guns, destroyer's 5-inch cannons, Tomahawk missiles, etc. And if you have a passenger area like the Galaxy, you have an amphibious craft that can deliver troops to the shore for SEAL-like spec-ops or Marine-like amphibious assaults. |

For the size of the boat, i think it is perfect. I have some people telling me it should be larger, and some telling me it should be smaller. This is only the first step in the process. And aquatic warpgates is exactly what i had in mind. I do like the idea of people being able to run around on the boat, but there needs to be a limit. Thats why i kept the guns on the boat toaned down, so other people could use their own AV weapons or maxes against aircraft of other boats.

Definetly up the machine guns from 12mm - that's a harasser ladys and gents =P
But the whole 'moving around' idea wouldn't work - think about how ass it would be to have 10 softies on the deck with AV, NOTHING could touch the thing. I like the idea of it basically being a more well gunned water based galaxy, X softie + X max passengers, driver, and gunners. As far as loading goes, load them on the shore, and unload them on the shore, it would be tactically sound if loading / unloading was done manually at safer locations via driving the boat up to the shore and pressing b to "anchor" at which point people can enter and exit. Using loading crafts might be sketchy, unless we wanted another vehicle added that the soon to be passengers drive into the boat themselves. Gal's dont have any special loading procedures, if it's on the ground you get in, otherwise you can't get on. One concern of mine however, unless this thing has armour up the ying yang, I don't think it could survive one magrider given it's weaponry, much less two. It could just be me personally but I don't think that would make much sense. p.s. i think it's totally rad you made this Last edited by Jeffey; 2005-04-26 at 02:13 PM. |
