Spec into Infantry

So we know there will be quite a large amount of skill trees/specializations/ and what not. I think I remember a dev saying you can spend a year going into a single tank and not being done. So my question is can you do the same to yourself?

Can you upgrade/progress in enhancements such as implants/armor/weapons and increasing your role as infantry. Namly things similar to implants is what im curious about. And will useable abilities go along with infantry speccing or remain purely implants (if their there)

One idea for it would be Increased Bone Density:Player receives less damage from falling and shock damage from explosive non-fragment weapons

That sounds truly 'awesome' but sounds a tad hyperbolic to say a person can spend an entire year on progressing in one vehicle...

Where is the source can you kindly divulge an exact quote from them stating this?

That's from the Machinima interview (top of the page under PSU headlines). Matt mentioned that in relation to speccing in one tank.

Interesting question Senyu, I am also wondering just how much infantry speccing there will be. Going out on a limb, I'd say that since there will be more infantry than tank drivers, they'd want to have a larger variety of skills for training as an infantryman.

Related to your question about implants, Matt did confirm that they were in, also in the Machinima interview.

well each weapon will have its own tech tree i think its said, id imagine some armors if not all will also have a degree of tech tree. so just like a tank it would be possible to specilize in certian weapons quite a bit, just like id imagine you can dedicate time into and infil tree, or a max tree.

Im pretty sure they also stated that there will be no damage degrading abilities at all. No tank builds for joo.

I don't see anyone talking about damage degradation here. He's just referring to the depth of skill customization that will be available to an infantry soldier. As mentioned above, we suspect there will be large skill trees for each weapon, as well as trees for your soldier specifically such as the ability to jump slightly higher, take a bit less fall damage when dropping off of a roof, or sprint a bit further before running out of stamina.

As far as tank builds, I'm not sure what you're referring to. Of COURSE there will be tank builds -- Matt is talking specifically about tank builds in that video. He said if you really enjoyed driving tanks, you could improve your skills and specific customizations/side-grades/abilities related to a single MBT.

He means tank in the MMO sense, as in taking more damage as you spec deeper.

Dam then, if its like that (years worth of speccing potentially for everything) im freaking excited. Finnaly a game that has a mind boggling amount of skills and customization for you to reach for and earn.

EvE wasn't fun enough for me to enjoy their mind boggling amount of skills

Ah I gotcha Bags, just not used to seeing "tank" used in the PlanetSide world By "degrading" he must have meant resilience. Since the whole 20% max difference plan is in place, I imagine we might see a few implants and skills that will make you a little more tank-like, but I certainly wouldn't refer to it as a tank build.

It'll more likely be a logical progression for most every player who doesn't plan on spending every day, all day in a vehicle.

@Senyu - I'm psyched too man, I really can't wait to see what all is available with the skill tree system. Matt said "hundreds to thousands" of skills in one interview, so I'm very excited to make up some long-term plans for what sorts of things I want to spec in eventually. It will really help add that evolving, persistent feeling to your character -- not just a battle rank and a few loadouts that define you.

It's pretty much a copy of Eve's system from how they make it sound. Which worries me somewhat since a year or more to train your class sounds too long. Especially since in that example he said it would be that long just for training with that one tank. Infantry are going to have at least several different roles to train like Assualt, Recon, Medic, Engineer, whatever the jump jet guys are, and MAX's. An maybe broken down even further like having Snipers an Heavy weapons guys as separate class's.

Personally I would like to have some variety in my play an taking years to train up each of these doesn't sound fun but that's just me.

I dont know, a year long worth of speccing makes it seem like a game I will be playing for a long time.

I guess it depends on how its set up. Like are there powerful things that you want at the end of the skill tree making it worth a year to spec into. Or are the deep skills very small like 1% better effects but still add something for those hard corde specilizers.

Yes these are two extreme examples but you get the differences

If its anything like EVE, then there will be very stiff diminishing returns on capability vs training time.

Training level 5 in a skill in eve takes 4 or 5x longer than 1-4 combined. Only people really in love with a particular vehicle/armor/weapon will max it out, and their months of extra training will yield them a few % difference.

Assuming you start out in the 75-80% area, you'd have 95% within a couple months, with that last 5% taking forever.

Reminds me of diablo 2 where leveling up to 82 took some decent time but just getting to 83 you had to kill Baal 500 times. Cant imagine those that got up in the 90s....

What I also find sad is ive always been able to respec when i wanted to well every 24hrs or whatever it is now think its 12, and pick something else up. and I recall them saying theres no current way to respect at this time and probably wont be at launch so what if i want to experience everything to see what am good at in ps2?. and ill admit am a below avrage player i do alot of support rolls because of this. but i also like getting in there and trying to get some kills mostly trying to brake into a base the back door front door top door any of that I find it the best action in ps1. so because of this its gonna take me prob 4 years to finish specing in support/grunt type stuff?. in 4 years and thats not counting if i wanna be a commander too.

Sorry I kinda went on a lil rant there. but really am hoping am wrong and it wont be that Hard but the way i see it going 4 years /sigh

I dont think its going to be that bad. We still need to see how its even implemented. Powerful end trees or just small percentages for those hard core specs
