What WWII Warplane Did You Like Most?

What did you like about it, and what features or character would you like to see from it in Planetside2?

I liked the camouflage of the Spitfires offset by the sometimes audaciously large markings of concentric circles of various bright colors.

from aeroflight.co.uk:

I also like, physically, the shape of the Hawker Typhoon, which was meant to be a fighter, but was found to not be great for that, but was an awesome and terror-inspiring ground attack aircraft. That huge scoop below the engine, like hood scoops on cars that used to be functional, just seems to say "So much power here, can't contain it all in the usual profile".

from anticsonline.co.uk:

I would like to be able to really customize a plane so that it looked rough and combat-hardened, but had some flamboyance like the WWII fighters.

The P47 Thunderbolt. Invasion stripes, shiny aluminum fuselage, and checkerboard cowl all say one thing: "I am more interested in my own guys recognizing me quickly than I am scared of enemy fire."

Personally, i'm a huge fan of the German military... maybe it's because of my Chilean background and their strong German influence from the early 1900's.

But my all time favorite warplane was the Messerschmitt Bf 109

She's beautiful.

I like German camouflage and the variety of different vehicles they had in general. The Art of War, so to speak.

from ebaum's world:

So, what B17 style did you like, Firefly? Shiny aluminum? Olive?

As an interesting note: power adders:

BF109E-7Z: Nitrous oxide, enabling higher altitudes to be achieved

The Spitfire could use higher supercharger boost for five minutes.

The Americans used engines that didn't use WOT, but only went wide open throttle in emergencies, sometimes almost doubling the engine output.

But, I digress. If they had planes that looked like Hawker Typhoons, I would be tempted to be a pilot in PS2.

As a Brit, I have to pick one of our planes:

Avro Lancaster; I love the multiple crew aspect of the bomber. The remaining one (in Britain, the other is in Canada) we often see flying around over Cheltenham, along with the other planes in the Battle of Britain memorial flight.

Kittyhawk (because it's one of the planes my grandfather flew)

I'd love to see decals like the shark mouth in Planetside 2. Something special so you can customize your squadron.

I like all of them. I'm actually a huge fan of all WW2 prop warplanes, but the B17 is my favourite - I have no preference as to the colour. It holds revered status with me because my grandfather on my dad's side was a B17 commander during the war. An interesting coincidence, my grandfather on my mum's side was a P51 pilot at the same time and evidently they've figured out that they flew together on at least two missions.

P-38 Lightning

I remember reading a couple months ago of a pilot's first hand account of learning how to fly them in the pacific theater. Going from a Corsair (I think) to a Lightning was like going from a Fiat to a Ferarri in terms of aircraft power.

For me, that sucker just looks too exotic to be in WWII. Yet it came to great use even against the most nimble aircraft.

If we're talking Bombers though, B25. Best way to sum it up is by showing a clip from this true story movie.

Fixed cannons. Only thing keeping this fucker from doing barrel rolls in combat is the 6000 lb payload in it's belly (and other obvious tangables).

How do you like those turbochargers on the P-38? The name on the nose says it all, doesn't it?

I wonder if having both those engines to blow air across the wings and tail made it so that low-speed maneuverability was better than with a regular plane, because even at zero mph, with propeller wash, you could do something as far as moving your plane with the control surfaces.

Vectored thrust, WWII version!

I'd like a divebomber in PS2 like the JU-87 Stuka. Or maybe even just a single-seat bomber like a Hurricane MkIIC (technically not a divebomber). The lib is ok, but I want to do a nose dive from above the clouds and drop bombs on an unsuspecting tank.

The Stuka is slow and vulnerable, but it packs a punch, especially with the 40mm cannon alterations they sometimes flew with. The dive siren was also a nice psychological touch added in that worked well. They faired well in the early war, but when Germany started fighting countries with a functional airforce, they were decimated.
