If I were to upgrade my system, buying everything new except my monitor, keyboard/mouse, optical drives and hard drive, would it be legal to use the copy of Windows on that hard drive in the otherwise entirely new computer?

Who knows? Who cares? Big bad Microsoft cant do jack sh!t to you. In my oppinion, just do it. My dad has done it with windows 98 and windows XP, and nothing bad happened. But, if you respect microsoft, and dont want to break their user agreement thingy, than dont.

it is legal to use 1 copy of windows per 1 computer, so if the other one didnt exist in any real sece, then yes.

According to the license, you're allowed to have one installed copy of windows at a time. It doesn't matter to them if you change what hard drive it's on every day (of course, you may have to call them for new activation number since you're changing everything... unless you just go get a serial that doesn't need to be activated )

It's not even a question... if you only have it installed on one system it doesn't matter. You own the License and have the right to transfer it at need...

And who pays 400 bucks for XP pro... 150 at the most, everyone has an old copy of 98 or ME lying around for the UpGrade path

I agree that the price of this crap is getting a bit outa hand... but just think if all those nice people who steal it and use it... like the Millions of Chinese who have bootlegs, if all of them had paid ... oh let's say 20 bucks, how much lower it would be for all of us.

Bootlegging doesn't hurt anyone but the Honest consumers... we have to pay out the nose.

(And to be honest if it wasn't my bussiness and therefore I have an interest in being above the board, I'd probably be Bottlegging like everyone else)
