Thoughts on PS4 getting PS2, and why it's an awesome thing

I'm feeling really positive about PS2 coming to PS4, I think it's the perfect game to show off how important this hardware leap will be this generation.

Planetside 2 shows that hardware can be utilized for purposes other than graphics. Being able to have massive worlds with hundreds of players on consoles is a big deal, and will hopefully free up developers to venture into new conceptual areas with new games. No longer are they limited to what they've been limited to for the past 8 years.

Ps4 is about as powerfull as a budget amd gaming pc. Bring ps2 to it only limits future expansion.

That's really ignorant I almost didn't comment. But decided you deserved it.

i hear that the GPU is the equivalent of a GTX 670.

that is not a "budget" pc, that is more mid-to-high range.

It'll probably run smoother on PS4 than it will most people's PC's hah. It doesn't have to worry about using any of its power on anything except the game.

How will it limit expansion?

im sure he means by the fact that they will have to keep the engine's performance down a bit, but im sure he doesnt realize that its already being slightly restricted by the whole 'lets it run on 5 year old computers' philosophy with the game.

Also its been stated that they will be two separate games on different platforms....but my real question is how is it going to work with all the controls in planetside 2 and how will they handle microtransactions on the PS4...But we will have to wait till E3 to find all that out now wont we.

While it is true currently the game is being held back by trying to cater to cheapskates on 6 year old pc's, this will not always be the case. Smedley stated that the idea was to have a mmofps that had a 13 year development cycle. We look back now 5 years at the pc hardware that is already holding the game back what will we do in 3 years time when it is the playstation 4's mediocre hardware holding back potential development.

As for being 2 separate products? well why would they spend 2 amounts of money developing the same game in 2 different directions rather than just capping the product at the weakest link.

To answer the "comparable to a 670" we have heard bold claims before regards the playstation (ps3 was banded around as a "supercomputer" tobeat all pc's and consoles.... never delivered) and the 670 has already been superseded and even before that was a mid to budget card.(EDIT: Having looked into it performance seems to be pegged around a gtx580 level) Bringing hardware back to PS2 the game eats CPU's not graphics cards and the PS4 will have a lower power (1.6ghz) multicored (8) AMD CPU (ask the AMD users how they are enjoying their FPS).

Bring in the whole "playstation won't have to run all the other stuff in the background" BS as with all consoles they are likely to mirror each other and we all ready see with the xbox one that it is all about running stuff in the background to facilitate the switching between features.

No matter what you do with multicore hardware in a game like ps2 you can only optimise so far and it is my opinion that the ps4 will be akin to tying one arm behind the programmers back both now and in the future only serving as a knock on to limit the games potential development for us PC's gamers.

Now while i can appreciate the extra exposure that a console release brings it will as it always has ruin it in the long run.

Yea, no, wrong.

Yes, its CPU isnt exaclty an I7, but you cant compare a Console CPU with a PC CPU directly. There is a lot of other stuff that plays a role in CPU performance, and the PS4s architecture does help a crapton there. Also, Optimization of games for Consoles is a completly different thing than for PCs. Its a closed system where every single user has the exact same hardware and software combination, with zero differences. Means you can go crazy on optimizing for just that one setup, usually boosting performance by a crapton.

Planetside 2 wont be limited by the PS4. PCs are currently Limiting Planetside 2.

No.

It means there will be enough players to continue to have future expansions.

If people on the PC don't want to play the game what makes you think the PS2 will be any different once the new game smell wears off?

At least people won't be leaving because of performance issues, or at the very least be far less likely.

99% of future expansion will be built within the confines of the specifications that SOE has made for the game when it launched in 2012. They won't be increasing server size or complexity of scenes rendered. Gameplay scripting changes and stuff that can radically improve the game doesn't require more power. The only thing that will really have to increase is the server hardware as they track more data at once.

The PS4 has more than enough RAM and CPU power for any future upgrades to this game.

Was that an intentionally stupid troll attempt?

In case it wasnt.

PS4 has a huge player base much larger than the player base with gaming computers.
If you can pull players from an additional group you didnt have access to before you will end up with a larger playerbase.
