How to Fix Planetside 2 - CreditCards!!

What if Sony still required that you create an account with a credit card? It would still be a free to play game, but it would keep people from creating 100 different toons (maybe 1 per faction with a 24 hour cool down like PS1). It would also make people think twice about getting banned for cheating. For those without credit cards I don't know ...

Thoughts?

But I like the easy access this game brings. Banning should be done at a hardware level. Thes cheaters should be forced to buy a new rig if they want to hack.

No because then CoD/Battlefield kiddies wouldn't be able to play. Also, smed would have to admit he was wrong about 'f2p'.

I'm not saying change the f2p model. Just make them register a credit card. It would be a problem for those without credit cards so there would need to be something to take that into account. Maybe make it a "Mostly" free to pay where you might have to buy a game card with a positive balance on it ... say $5-$10. You could use it for station cash or you could trade it back in for cash later. Not really sure what would be a good idea for credit-card-less people ...

There's no feasable way to do this at a hardware level. IP's wont work because 99% of people use DHCP. MAC addresses don't work because the layer 2 header is stripped at various points while traversing the layer 3 network. And just about everything else can be spoofed.

Sure there is a feasible way to do this. Ever wonder why, when re-installing Windows after (typically) the third try, it tells you that the only way you can activate is through the phone? That's right, hardware hashes. Sure, they can be spoofed, but spoofing a CPU or GPU hash is a lot harder than spoofing a MAC address. Would some people still get around it? Of course. You can never completely eliminate hacking, but each step you take to impede the process reduces the number of those who try by an order of magnitude. Combined with an at least mildly vigilant CSR team, it won't be difficult to single out the few individuals who still go through the trouble of hacking.

Trying to track the hardware isn't really doing anything when anyone can login from anywhere. It might put a few people off though. Security in layers as they say. As for the ip and mac spoofing ... no one would need to spoof anything. MAC addresses are stripped and replaced as part of the process of routing layer 3 packets (tcp/ip) and most internet service providers charge you to get a static IP address. DHCP will periodically assign you a new address or you can just renew your address.

Yup, and that's better than credit cards. Not everyone has a credit card outside the us, but everybody who has internet also has a phone.

No it isnt. Store three blocks from me sells prepaid cellphones for about 15 bucks or so.

Not many will spend that for simply creating a new account if the bans are swift. And those that do? Bleed 'm dry.
