Cost to play

I was wondering if it would be possible to play planetside 2 on a 500$ rig, not including a case mouse keyboard and monitor.

It would be entirely possible as long as you shop smart. I've been able to put together a list for a $500 system without a case, monitor, mouse, and keyboard easily.

depends on your image quality settings/monitor resolution, but doable.

Tips: (comparing roughly equivalent components)
Intel>AMD
nVidia>ATI/AMD.
no more than 8GB of ram really needed
SSD = win, but not needed.

Not trying to spark fanboy debate, just going off of general feedback for this specific game.

For this game yes.... But in general ATI is not really better then nvidia. Way nvidia is better for this game is because this game have physX suport that gives the game exatra cool special effects and ATI cards can't use physX because Nvidia owns the code.

exactly! as far as I know nVidia has given time/development assistance to this game, coupled with the physX support you mentioned gives the advantage. I went with nVidia for another reason (CUDA) but glad it worked out for this game too.

You are definitely starting fanboy debate by stating things like that.
(comparing roughly equivalent components)
Ya, ya, that's correct. But for under 500$, you're gonna have a difficult time going Intel. But hey, buyer's choice.
The big killer in PS2 right now is that ATi cards perform horribly and Nvidia cards perform great.

I dont think intel had/has a 10fps bug like AMD in planetside2? don't know if this is fixed yet as I dont game with one.

You're reusing a case, what about the power supply? If you're reusing that too how many watts is it?

Do you also need a new hard drive?

AMD CPUs suck at the moment no ATI cards. Get your facts straight. My 7950 has no issues playing this game maxed out at 1920x1080.

My AMD PII X4 970 has no issues playing this game (high settings) at the same resolution. What gives?

Not encouraging AMD explicitly, as intel obviously provides better performance. But I'll admit that I'm wrong on ATi cards performing horribly; just going of off what I heard.

Well if your not big on name brand parts 500 should land you a decent rig get 60-90Dollar MB and get an AMD 3ghz 6core Chip set, 6 GIGs of cheap ram and a Nvidia 9800gtx\250\450\550\or 650 graphics card and you should be pretty good to go.

You did not mention it, but you could not also fit an OS in for $500. All of that money would have to be spent on parts only. But yes it's very doable.

If you don't need a monitor, keyboard, case and all this, 500$ is enough. Buy an i5, an asrock board, 8gb RAM any hdd and the best graphics card you can afford with the rest of your money.

I get 60 fps on low with a 2500k @ stock speeds and a 560 (non TI). I would probably get at least a 650, 660, or 660 TI+. Biggest bang for your buck would be in the graphics department assuming you have an i5 to keep it fed.
