Yeah, myself and few outfit mates have seen it have issue, seem to come back, but not recover. Another thing is if you alt-tab or "windows key" out, it'll often crash then.

I did see some small patches recently and I'm wondering if their optimization attempts might not have created a temporary bug.

One thing I did notice was I was crashing much more when I had "sound channels" all the way up. Forgot name, but it's how many simultaneous sounds play for you. I put it at default and there's less crashes.

If I get a Steam alert, or Steam chat from a friend while in game it gives me all kinds of issues. I have PS2 as stand alone so I just exit steam before I launch PS2. Not sure if it is related or not but throwing that out there.

People, including myself, seem to crash much more often now when using any kind of overlay and especially after Alt-tabbing.

I've been getting a freeze and recovery occasionally since about two GU's ago, which is actually the NVIDIA video driver crashing and restarting (check your system events log to see if that's the case for you).

PS2 used to just straight up crash my video driver and boot me. Especially with physx on. Now it crashes the driver but restarts it so I get stuck, then get a slideshow. If I go to the map, alt tab out and back in it seems to reset the driver and I can keep playing as normal.

Not sure why, its just my experience.
