Where are the machine guns?

Well? Why doesn't any empire have a Light Machine gun? or Heavy machine gun emplacements?

How about a common pool LMG, altough it would be cool to have a empire specefic...hm..

NC would have something comparable to the M60E3.

100 rounds of hard hitting 7.62x39.

TR would have something comparable to a SAW. 200 rounds of 5.56 rounds.

VS would have something like an RPD. 150 rounds of something inbetween.

Of course these won't be the ACTUAL guns or the same ammo. Just something to base it off as. We need squad support weapons. Maybe then we'll stop using bursters to suppress infantry.

THe short answer is suppresion fire doesnt work as well in a world where the soldiers dont fear death.

Also the weapons systems wernt built along those lines. Plus the MCG makes a damn fine 60 stand in.

it might not work as well but it still works very well. I see troops hiding behind trees rocks and anything else to hide from turrets, bursters, vanguards, maxes, and more to say the least. I think it has great potential as a squad automatic weapon.

Even so, fast machine gun style weapons are suppposed to be the Terran Republic's style. If you want machine guns, join TR, you want shot guns, join NC, and if you want energy weapons join VS. It's that simple.

automatic weapons are only good for one thing. supressive fire.

since i have seen noone use small unit tactics effectively, i'm going to assume noone knows what the hell supressive fire is.

basically, a light machinegune, or Squad Automatic Weapon(SAW), is issued to two men in a squad, one to each fire team. the SAW is used to keep the enimy's heads down to allow the rest of the squad to either, advance or retreat with a minumum of freindly casualties. i have not seen anyone using this sort of tactics anywhere outside of the military, or PaintBall, and especially not in Planetside. mainly due to the tendency of players going off on their own with no real structure within units. simply put, a machinegun will do you about as much good as a soundless speaker.

one more thing. for the record, the M60 is a Medium Machinegun. it goes like this, M204(5.56mm)=LMG/SAW, M240(7.62)=MMG, M2(.50[12.7])=HMG. it's all about the calibur of ammunition. pistol caliburs are used by Submachineguns, intermediate Caliburs are used in Light Machineguns, Rifle caliburs are used in Medium Machineguns, and heavy, Anti-Materiel caliburs are used by the heavy Machineguns.

YOU HAVE BEEN ENLIGHTENED!

M204 is an M4 assult rifle with a 40mm grenade launcher on it. That is not a LMG. The SAW (M249) is the light MG) M60 is MMG and the Browning M2 is the Heaver (.50cal machinegun)

Edit: DOH M204... I dont know what that is The m203 is the M4 with a 40mm GL on it. (been too long since ive seen one)

Prone would be a great idea. I have been thinking about this for some time, and it would be an incredibly useful tool for snipers, MCGs, and AV/AA. How big of a reduction in COF should a prone player have in your opinion?

I disagree on the uselessness of light or heavy machineguns. Infantry regularly hide from snipers and fire from vehicles by hiding behind terrain and down hallways. I think a machinegun would be great for slowing down the infantry blitzing the base walls, as well as (effectively) supressing a specific hallway and forcing the enemy to take a different route.

Deliverers manned with two gunners make great suppression weapons.

Misc Info

I think some kind of heavy wepon cert that is made for heavy supression fire and gerneral medium-long range heavy fire is needed.
A kind of Medium/Light machine gun would be in order for the TR

The nc could have that new airburst projectile surpressive fire gun that they are testing, and will replace the .50 cal mg with

And the VS could have soem kind of heavy beem thingamagig

No one over br 5 is afraid of supression fire.

Its simply not effective.

All an MG nest would be is a target for snipers.
