I think people should give some props to the Thumper. I think this is possibly one of the best weapons in the game. What other weapon (besides Pounder Max and grenades) can you use to shoot down and around hallways and stairwells and over base walls? You can use to lob over hills where snipers or infils may be hiding? And with the normal grenades (and surge) you can take down a MAX - takes some skill. With the Plasma grenades, you can possibly drop a reinforced in 6 shots (with some direct hits). Infils in 2 shots!
Given it does cause some grief is used incorrectly and if used too close to an enemy can cause yourself some damage (In these situations, you should be using a HA weapon anyways). Anyway, just wanted to throw some love out to the Thumper even though I don't see many people using it in the field. Later all. |

I used to love this weapon was soo much fun standing on a base wall tagging people with nades
Like you said it requires practise and it took me a solid week of only using it to learn the trajectory of the nased and be able to go head to head with infantry (60-40 success rate) against normal medium assault's.

Hello,
I'm thinking of switching back to Special assault from Heavy. I loved the Thumper and Decimator way too much, and the Jackhammer isn't as fast against a Max as the decimator. The best fun with a Thumper is getting up on the wall of a base in which you are attacking. I ran up to a Vanu base once, got onto the outside top of the wall, and ran over to an AMS parked on the inside of the wall below me. Talk about a list of kills! They didn't know what the hell was happening as I started to rain down frag grenades on them. It was a total slaughter, and I was all giggly inside from the destruction. Mu hahahahaha! Yes, when used correctly, they rock. You still need a Gauss to whip out if caught in the open though. 8-) |

I really like the thumper.
It's always one of the weapons I carry. I think of it a bit like a meat-tenderiser. I load up some plasmas and soften up targets a bit before they run into other peoples' cycler fire. (It's also fun to do that with AMS.) Best shot with thumper was some guy on a vehicle pad at a base. I was on the ground, he was up top firing down at people. All I could see was a name tag; I think even that dissappeared. Did a bit of a range find with first shot and, somehow, took him out with second. He must have been wounded and annoyed by that - killed from below by someone he couldn't see. Took out a Vanu max with frag + surge about five minutes ago. He took me down to next-to-nothing, though. |

I'm TR on emerald. I used to have special assault too and i experimented with all 3 of the weapons. The thumper was the only one i consider to be a good weapon. The rocklet launcher would always injur, but never kill, used up ammo way too fast, had too small of a blast radius, and wasn't effective against really anything. The decimator was really powerful, but i found it impossible to hit a MAX or vehicle with it at any range except right up close since it only fired in a striaght line. That and you couldn't carry very many shots becasue there was no ammo for it and it look up lots of inventory space. I prefer the striker personally.
But the thumper is different. It has a huge blast radius and with two direct shots brings down a guy in agile, 3 for reinf. That is on either frag or plasma grenades. It was fun being able to bouce nades around the stairs inside and it was good for killing groups of people at close range. You could also carry a lot more ammo since the boxes are smaller than the striker and hold 6 instead of 3. However, I could never bring down a MAX with it, which was the problem. Carrying a thumper and a cycler gave me nothing to fight a MAX with, and decimators never worked for me either. I ended up dropping the cert and getting AV, and I love the striker. Its the ultimate MAX killer and works well against tanks too. Between that and a cycler or sweeper, i can handle anything. I will soon grab heavy assault too once the MCG upgrades have been implemented. I'll prolly try it again to see if its any easier to kill a MAX with, because that is what I want it to do. I can't carry both a thumper and a striker, it just doesn't work. So unless i find that the thumper can be effective against MAX's and vehicles, which I don't think its its true purpose, I just don't have enough room for it in my inventory. As much as I like it, a cycler/strikeror MCG/striker just works better IMHO. |

Best and only best kill I made with one was in the middle of a rain storm, a base (I forget where) was under heavy attack, I was on the east wall and in the mist/rain I spotted a guy running across my LOS at about 30metres I led the X-hair and fired the first frag nade hit him direct. I fired again still leading and hit him direct with the second one and that was that he died I was soo happy

While in a straight fight, Heavy Assult is more ideal for kills. I consider the Thumper more useful in the hands of an engineer/medic/hacker, any kind of support class. Firing the Thumper at every opportunity will get you a lot of TKs, and run out your ammo fast. But between repairing MAXes and setting up SpitFires, I keep an eye out for groups of infantry who would set up a good shot for a grenade. I definatey love my Thumper.
But if you're just wanting to add a little versatility to your attacks, keep a couple plasma's on you. You can toss them down halls without having to carry the whole weapon. Decimators... gotta love 'em. When you've got enemy MAXes coming down a hallway, a Decimator is your best friend. Though if you're carrying nothing but Decimators and someone with anything more than a Beamer jumps you, you're good as dead. Rocklet Launcher is the reason I picked up Special Assult. Shame it turned out to be more trouble than it's worth. The manual describes the rocklets as dumbfire projectiles. This simply isn't true. They target friendly players. |

Like someone said, it's a great "tenderizer" allowing your squadmates to finish off the enemies that you softened up.
Also, when attacking a tower and having numerous enemies in the basement will make for a fun bounce-off-the-wall killing fest! If in the right place and at the right time, in my opinion, the Thumper can do more damage than even the HA weapons - again, given the right situation... |

The thumper... mmm mmm mmm the thumper. Master of indirect fire. The most tactically potent weapon in the game.. IMO of course. When taking towers with the NC horde (I'm NC, but I know how the thing works) 'round the stairs, nothing works better for getting a JH in your locker than a thumper. Boucing frag nades 'round corners will get you a suprising amount of kills, unless you have some idiots charging while you thump. A common strategy between be an a squad of friends (when taking towers) would be to have 2 thumpers at either door lobbing frag nades down and up the stairs. a hacker and a HA (hammer of course) surge up the stairs when our thumper reloads, and the thumper shooting to his opposite down the stairs stops shooting so we can throw in 3 more hammers down to clear the basement. Any max the goes near the greande's area of effect would be damaged, so the instinctively fall back. For the MAX's up the stairs, we'll throw in a decimator or two and they're nothing. If it's the republic locked down however, we send in someone to give us a location on where they are locked, and let our thumpers kill'em from out of sight.

Anyone who sees me or finds my corpse will find a thumper and a butt load of plasma nades. I carry the thumper and a decimator 90% of the time. The only time I don't is when I'm setting up lots of deployables or driving. When deploying I carry a pulsar with a couple of boxes of ammo for self defense and 10 ACEs for that job.
The thumper with plasma grenades is simply the best all round weapon in the game in my opinion. Indirect fire, splash damage, burning effect, ability to bounce grenades around corners and good rate of fire. What more could you ask for. It's good outside and inside. As far as it being a grief maker, I've never gotten over 70 grief during the entire time I've played the game. Thumper= |

mmm, thumper. great stuff if you can stop the local yokels from zerging around the corner for just half a second while you spam a bit to tenderize your enemies.
I'm always torn between plasma and frag. anyone have any convincing arguments either way? course, either way I always ALWAYS carry one box of EMP grenades *evil laugh*

In my opinion, the biggest problem with the thumper (not sure if anyone's mentioned this yet...) is the rediculous amounts of grief that can be accumilated by using this otherwise awsome weapon. I all too often find myself holding off on perfect opportunities to drop some warm plasma on a crowd of overconfident enemies, due to a couple friendlies that are in my way. In the few times that i've tried throwing all caution to the wind while using this gun, i've ended up with well over 700 grief points before coming to my senses.
