Does it really suprise you that much? Garfield has turned into a HUGE franchise. Jim Davis owns his own animation studio. They've done cartoons, video games, countless toys. It was only a matter of time before they made a movie, espeically with modern computer graphics.

The old Garfield movies are classic cartoons. My favorite was Garfield In Hawaii, or something similar. I wouldn't dismiss this so easily.
EDIT: J-Love... great, there goes my lunch. BUT WAIT! What's this? Bill Murray as the voice? Hmmm, can he beat out (rest in peace) Lorenzo Music, the original Garfield? They sound similar...
