Games Workshop dumps Warhammer Online

Massively multiplayer project bites the dust as Games Workshop cancels work

British tabletop gaming firm Games Workshop has cancelled work on Warhammer Online, the massively multiplayer game which was being developed by Climax based on its best-known role-playing property.

In a terse statement issued to the financial markets today, Games Workshop said that "this decision was taken following a full review of the progress, costs to date and future costs of the project."

The game was being created as a co-development between Games Workshop and Climax, and both firms have apparently agreed to the termination of the project. It was due to be published worldwide by Sega.

It's not clear what factors caused the development of the title - which was significantly advanced - to be halted, although competition in the massively multiplayer market is certainly tougher now than it was two years ago when the project was started.

Several other Warhammer licensed projects have been given the go-ahead by Games Workshop over the past few years - including online FPS title Fire Warrior, which was developed by Kuju and released last Christmas, and a strategy title, Dawn of War, which is being created by Relic for release later this year.

From the warhamemr website.....

It is with a great deal of sadness that I have to inform the community that we have decided to discontinue the development of Warhammer Online and will be closing down this website with immediate effect.

This has been a difficult and painful decision but it was taken following a following a full review of the progress of the game, costs to date and future costs of the project. As a result both Games Workshop and Climax Development Limited, the computer games developer, have agreed to terminate the development project.

I would like to say a personal thanks to all of the people who have followed our development over the last few years, your constant support and enthusiasm has meant a great deal to us.

I wasnt interested in it, still, sucks for the all the fans of it.

My question is why would you stop development when it (seemed) so close to completion?

Would of never worked out commercially.

I wish half the developers of MMORPG's realized their game's lack of potential before release. Would of prevented the flooding of the market with such peices of shit as Asherons Call 2, Lineage 2, Shadowbane, FFXI, and others.

Shadowbane was a miserable failure due to:

1. Being released in the midst of giants.
2. Having an atrocious interface (point click move).

The premise was good. But then, all premises are good.

FFXI is yet another uninspired level based system. Takes a 7 year old exactly 10 minutes to think up a level based system, and that's what they went for.

There is only one reason to play Lineage 2. It's not for the storyline. It has none. It's not for the gameplay, it sucks. It's not for the leveling system, that's uninspired.

Why would you play it?

Simple.

So you can look up the female elf and female human mini skirts.

Guaranteed the developers of Lineage 2 spent exactly 2 days planning their leveling/gameplay system and spent the next few months perfecting the way the charachters bend over when they run.
