Possible solution to the grief system

A lot of people (including myself) think the grief system is flawed. Most of the time you get little grief for a lot and too much for nothing. You get grief for the stupidest things. The grief system is based on points per damage. The more damage you do the more points you get. Instead it should be based on damage per death. The more damage you do to someone the more grief you get when they die. For example if someone jumps in front of you and you hit and do little damage when they die you will get maybe 1 or 2 griefpoints. If you kill someone you will get a good 30 or 40 points. Of course it wouldn't be fun to hit someone then 15 minutes later get 10 grief. Well there would be a time limit on how long you can still get grief. The more damage you do the longer the time limit.

A better idea would be to base grief on whether you could have done it intentionally...ie getting run over wont give you any.

So all you're doing is postponing when you get the grief?

And with the whole getting run over thing.... well it's the same as anything else, could be accidental, could be deliberate, could be none of your fault.

This is my response to those people.

1) Put down, and back away from, the spam weapon
2) Try aiming once in a while, it can be surprisingly satisfying
3) Aiming at friendlies to Tk them is a bad thing, in case no one filled you in on that
4) Slow the hell down when driving a tank in an area with alot of friendlies in it
5) If there is more green than red under your liberator, take your finger off the trigger
6) Bake at 350 degrees till golden brown

In just 30 minutes you have a lovely golden brown lack of grief.

I have no, nor will I ever have, pity for the players who get weapons lock. There is nothing wrong with the grief system for those with a little common sense.

No need to change the greif system, you shoot a guy, you get greif based on damage, not wheter or not you kill him. Would suck to get alot of greif for 1 stray bullet that killed someone wouldn't it.

The greif system is just fine, no need to change it.

Nicely put, the onlything I don't like about the grief system is when I'm running, and a veh hit's me, I get grief. I know the servers keep track of who's on foot and who's in veh's, so IMO, that could be an easy fix.

Good point, why do pedestrians get grief for getting run over? Most of the time, it's the vehicle driver that needs to exercise a bit of caution.

because people can jump infront of moving vehicles just to give other people grief, and/or to damage their vehicle.

When has the grief system stopped someone from jumping in front of a tank...

To prevent smacktards from running infront of vehicles for the purpose of giving the driver greif.

That, by far, is one of the best posts I've ever seen.

Yeah, obviously the greif system could be slightly better (ie if its not your fault or getting grief when someone rams you) but its pretty hard to have code predict what a player is thinking. Besides, there is NO way you can "accidently" get weapons lock and it not be your fault. So you get maybe 10 greif points, big deal, it doesnt affect you in any way which is why weapons lock is set so high. Grief system is fine as it is.

I've had over 100 grief points once, when somebody was annoying me and decided he would goad me into tk'ing him until I had weapons lock. I tk'd him about 20 times and had about 400 grief points. I wasn't even within spitting distance of weapons lock (and I felt much better, yay!). If you come close to weapons lock, you're playing wrong and most likely I'll feel better with you on an opposing empire.

There's no way it can be flawless. I think the grief system is fine, and I've used all of the "grief weapons" (AI Pounder MAX, Maelstrom, Plasma Thumper), and never weapon locked.

there is only one thing about the current grief system, its that it seems flails get noware near enough grief.

the system should be based on how much damage done, not how many hits you give them.
