I have seen a ton of explanations about the cone aiming system, then I saw this pic http://www.planetside-universe.com/m...php?img_id=337 and it got me wondering exactly how it works (again).
Take a look at the size of the red circle - does that mean it will hit somewhere within that cone? If so, is it a random roll of the "hit dice"? Does anyone have a simple, 'plain english' explanation of how it will apply in PS. I feel like a virgin asking this question, but I just can't get my head around it. |

its not nesasarily within the cone, because distance can make alot of difference in your shot too, but as you fire the circle becomes wider, basicaly indicating that your aim is getting worse, usualy if you go full auto on any gun your gonna end up losing control of your gun and spraying everywhere. But if you were to duck, and maybey use a rifle like the bolt driver the circle will decrease. It's basicaly an indicator to give you a general Idea of how well your aiming, not really a zone where your bullets will go or anything. If you've played CS youll notice when you shoot your cross hairs start to widen, its the same idea in planetside, just with a circle.

Basically, a cone of fire is a fictional cone in which a bullet will be randomly shot. The bullet will always stay inside this cone.
The wider the base of the cone (which is a circle defined by the range of the bullet and visibly shown by the reticle) the less likely the bullet will go into your opponent at a distance. Up close, the person will cover more of the cone, and the bullets are more likely to hit. The cone itself changes the radius of it's base (and therefore how likely the bullet is to appear next to your reticle center) depending on whether you are moving, crouching, jumping, have stamina, are being shot, have been shooting, or have been sitting still. In the end, it means accuracy is found for the man who crouches, fires short bursts of ammo, and waits for the cone to shrink and "aim". If he has stamina, or isn't being shot, then he also aims better. If the guy is running, jumping, being shot, firing full auto, and is low on stamina, then his cone will larger and he'll miss more often. See?

That is what I thought Zoo. So in the case of the pic, there is a good probability that he will miss as the cone is quite large.
Are the hits calculated like a dice roll? That is, where they go in the cone is completely random based on a roll? If the entire cone covers an enemy, does that mean certain hits as long as the cone remains covering the enemy 100%? |

look at it this way:
The center dot in most FPS games in now rand (dice roll) placed in that circle, and each shot will have a new rand created center. So, if your aim was good, and it fired in the center, you hit, or if your aim was to the left, but it fired to the right, you hit, etc... So, you dont have an exact center to your shots, but a general area they will hit. You still have to adjust for travel time, etc.

If you look hard you can see a smaller circle in the middle. I am assuming it is so large because he just fired his shotgun. Here is a more acurate representation.http://www.planetside-universe.com/m....php?img_id=75

I wouldn't be at all suprised to find that that's about as small as the jackhammer's reticle gets. It IS a shotgun, after all. I was also under the impression that, barring gravity effects, a projectile will always hit within that circle, however big it happens to be. On the other hand, many things are affected by gravity, so I guess we'll see how it goes. Time Will Tell. *sigh* |
