AFP French 'spiderman' mounts world's tallest building TAIPEI (AFP) - Frenchman Alain Robert defied bad weather to set a personal record by climbing the world's tallest building, Taipei 101, in four hours. Robert, dubbed the "French Spiderman" for climbing skyscrapers, set off for Taipei 101 around 10:00 am (0200 GMT) as light rain fell and strong winds lashed the building on the Christmas day. "This is so amazing," Robert exclaimed before taking on the final 60-meter (yard) top of the building. He reached the top of the 508-meter (1,676 feet) building shortly before 2:00 pm and waved to hundreds of people cheering and applauding on the ground. Robert has left his prints on many of the world's landmarks, including the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Empire State Building in New York, the Sydney Opera House and the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. Taipei's skyline became home to the world's tallest building on October 17 when the 101-storey tower was topped out. The skyscraper will be completed at the end of this month and will open to the public in the first quarter of 2005. The structure, Taiwan's largest engineering project yet, cost 58 billion Taiwan dollars (1.8 billion US). It was financed by the Taipei Financial Center Corp., which includes China Development Industrial Bank and Cathay life Insurance Co. Last year a five-storey shopping mall featuring brand-name fashion houses opened at the base of the skyscraper. ============================================ Whoa. The gun katas. Through analysis of thousands of recorded gunfights, the Cleric has determined that the geometric distribution of antagonists in any gun battle is a statistically predictable element. The gun kata treats the gun as a total weapon, each fluid position representing a maximum kill zone, inflicting maximum damage on the maximum number of opponents while keeping the defender clear of the statistically traditional trajectories of return fire. By the rote mastery of this art, your firing efficiency will rise by no less than 120%. The difference of a 63% increase to lethal proficiency makes the master of the gun katas an adversary not to be taken lightly. |
