So my idea for a Planetside 2 App and what features it should have.
You could make it so it resembles a handheld of a ps2 soldier. (3 themes for the empires) Show your char. Possibly in 3D (rotate). Mainly for showing it to friends (aka cheapest marketing known to mankind). Handle ingame Private Messages and respond. Calendar: To show upcomming events. RED ALERT: Phone starts playing an ALERT sound. Like an emergency call to every member of your outfit that they are needed ingame right now. (more of a goodie for outfit leaders). Chat: See your outfit chat. Chat with ingame players. Outfit Manager: Create Events. Promote/Demote Players. Maybe configure Outfit things. Youtube Channel featuring PS2 Vids. Forums. Stats of course Vehicles/Weapons catalogue. Set your Skill training in the app, not just in the game. Utopic stuff: set attack targets for your outfit. view a minimap of the continent youre on atm. With currently controlled facilities etc. Create character loadouts to use later. Suggestions by other ppl: NapalmEnima - Write all the recorded video/screen shots to the hand held and do the sharing from there using its standard Activities for such things. (i will add your thoughts here!) Please discuss and add your ideas Last edited by dobs; 2011-10-08 at 08:34 AM. |

The Problem is. If its done by the community you can only do:
Stats calendar youtube forums RED ALERT for the other things you need more api functions from soe. //edit: already thought about developing it myself (i have a bit of expierience with android) but you could not add the most interesting things due to the lack of api. But I can make some guestimates based on what I know about android development myself. For Instance: Rotatable 3D view of your character: Almost certainly not. Your PC might be able render and upload a video of loadouts X, Y, and Z... but storing and processing all the model, texture, and animation data needed to render a character with "in game" resolution? Not bloody likely. The 3D hardware isn't there. Your "utopic stuff" sounds like using the Android screen as Another Display for the game. I don't know if anyone has gotten an X Windows server to run on an android, but it IS running Linux under there. Remote UI shouldn't be a big stretch for an Android. That sort of thing was the first thing that occurred to me. Mobile-atizificate the squad command UI. Or the loadout/respawn picker, so you already have a location/loadout chosen when you die and can get back into the action that much faster. Like the Cash Shop, you'd want it to be a convenient way to do something you could already to ingame some other way. Kinda gimmicky to be honest. But cool. Here's one: Write all the recorded video/screen shots to the hand held and do the sharing from there using its standard Activities for such things. I'd really like to see some way to be notified when your empire/outfit Needs Your Help! A spiffy app wrapped around some relatively common communication protocol would be just the ticket. I'd also like to see some way to let the app know when not to bother me. "I'm available from X to Y, don't bother me outside these time periods on those days". It should also know when you're already on so as not to send out a desperate plea for aid from someone who's already vigorously fragging their enemies. There's some complications in terms of players/characters/servers, but that's the sort of thing that keeps software development from getting boring. :/ |

You log in, the data for your model + weapon + specific stuff is wrapped up and sent to your mobile. it is then rendered. This would allow to render it without storing all the models on it. Something like this would be easy to realize in unity. As they also have scalable detail for handhelds. (a few thousand polygons arent a problem for galaxy s1 and better. As long as you render just 1 model it should be possible). If not, you could still do it with flash. As a Prerendered video where "rotating" is just moving to a different timeframe. The video could easily be rendered on a server.
thx for the input Last edited by dobs; 2011-10-08 at 08:38 AM. |

As we blur the lines between online and offline life, making crossover apps and stuff that makes the real world an overlay on our online world, people like you are providing the seeds of tomorrow's killer apps.
How many people would have congratulated Steve Jobs BEFORE he made container-loads of cash on the ideas he fostered? Online and offline lives are being blended. So far, the technology is in its infancy, but immersion will continue to increase and further integrate online and offline activities. |
