Man, I'm glad my activation email came in this time. I tried to make an account here a couple of months ago, but the email never came. I couldn't stand not being able to share my thoughts, as I was a several year player of PlanetSide and it's one of my favorite games ever.
So, hey everybody. Anyway, one thing I've been wanting to comment on from the beginning was weapon designs. The weapons looked pretty good, for the most part, but I haven't really seen anyone else bring this up... The empire logos and to a lesser extent, the touches of color on the guns. I hate it. It makes them look like Nerf guns. Weapons in PlanetSide didn't have any decals or anything on them. You knew which weapon belonged to which empire. Especially since they're trying to visually distinguish the empires more this time around, do we really need those stickers on our guns? I just don't like the look of it. And I hate the blue on that NC launcher, but that's for that topic. Edit: Oops, should've changed my topic title. Not sure what I meant by "lately". I guess I was thinking of the "heavy" Cycler and the NC launcher, but that's only two weapons. Ignore that part. Last edited by Shotokanguy; 2012-01-29 at 01:58 PM. |

I believe that the BASE design doesn't look enough like the originals. They were quirky, but the backstory + supposed time period sort of made it "realistic." I.E. Cycler having two barrels; compact revolving cylinder shotgun; etc. NC stuff has all the tacticool rails and whatnot, but that's very "now" as opposed to "in the future." Gauss was really neat looking in the first game because it looked like it actually used UNKNOWN SCIENCE; and sounded like it too.
Wouldn't fit today's military style, but maybe in the future on another planet through a wormhole. In terms of artistic texturing, they don't look bad to me. Edit: Fucking love the NC infiltrator. DROOL.

Oh please. No one has ever called the designs "nerf guns" until Hmr85 did, and they have NO RESEMBLANCE whatsoever. The guns look fine. They are designed according to your faction's theme. If you don't like them, I'd suggest switching empires. I respect your opinion, I really do, but if you think you can do it better, do it yourself. Of course these guns are going to go through many different iterations, but the devs cannot cater to what everyone wants. I would have liked holstering and vehicle anims, but oh well, sucks for me.

But Nerf guns also have the Nerf logo on them somewhere. Adding that decal to the weapons in this game makes the resemblance stronger. Real weapons don't have logos on them. If nothing else, it just makes them look too busy. These weapons already have lots of little gadgets and things on them, adding more visual flair makes them look funny. Simplifying it a little can't hurt. |

If a little logo on the side of your gun you'll probably never pay any attention to bothers you that much, then for your sake I hope they put a toggle in the graphics menu for it.
I really like the art direction of the guns myself. I do however see that if the guns and soldiers were less detailed they might have the resources to create holstered guns instead of being able to see every thread on a soldier's uniform. |

Frankly I could really care less how it looks. I will shoot a big brown dirty junk yard of a turd gun all day as long as it gives me at least a level playing field or a slight advantage. I am not looking at people and how there avatar appears, I am too busy shooting them in the face to really care.
At the end of the day it's about hit's on the target, effectiveness of the weapon and its balance in the greater game mechanics between factions. Anything beyond that is just gravy for the X-Box generation of (insert derogatory term here). |

All in all I think the NC weapons look fine. They may be just a tad to bright but they are fine. With that said a few ways to improve on them is that they need some wear and tear on them. SOE needs to make it look like I took the gun and slung it down my driveway. I think that will take care of a lot of peoples problems. The faction logo looks fine imo. A beat up gun has character to it. A shiny new one does not. Last edited by Hmr85; 2012-01-29 at 03:34 PM. |

I sort of agree about the logos. They'd probably look better if they were embossed into the equipment (colourless), or if they at least looked more like they'd been painted/printed on, possibly with some wear or slightly washed out colours.
Edit: Admittedly, this only comes from NC examples. I haven't actually seen the TR/VS logos on anything yet. Last edited by Vancha; 2012-01-29 at 02:30 PM. |
