May I suggest an alternative? Your success hinges directly on the success of the game. Now, I'm not sure, but you don't seem to have a business/marketing background whereas I do, so indulge me a few thoughts. What you ought to be doing is using your position as a streaming site to promote the game to the potential target audiences of PS2. Now, most obviously that's probably Battlefield 3 players, but it really stands as pretty much all fps players. What I would do in your position is use market research as a means of promotion, you mention you're setting up a streaming site for Planetside 2 to various communities, drop some PS2 footage in there (not the 45 minute ones, yawn, tl;dr, it doesn't help much), and then ask people for their opinions of streaming services, the good the bad and the ugly, and what they think a service should and shouldn't do/be. Presentation is key of course, it's all about friendly demeanour. It's all about being likable. I've mentioned this to you before, the owner IS the site(or business) until a site's team grows to the tipping point where it becomes a brand, though that creates a barrier between site and community and should always be avoided at all costs. Anyway, presentation, it's all about being likable, friendly, making smart intelligent points. Above all though the important issue is ethics, get labelled unethical(or unlikeable) and it's all over, at least for the community that labels you such. After foot in the door with the market research (which also promoted and brought many people into the game), you have the opportunity to cater to those particular audiences while promoting yourself. Provided you presented yourself well in the first promotion you should be in good standing with the community so you're then able to easily make a success of the next promotion, that promotion should of course be doing something for that community, so let's say it's the BF3 community of reddit, well what you do is set up an event involving that community, get people on board with it, and stream it for them, showing off the tech lalala, all the while this is promoting PS2 to that audience. Same goes for the MW crowd. Same goes for the TF2 crowd. Same goes for the Tribes crowd. Same goes for the CS crowd. Same goes for even the Starcraft crowd, which of all of them should be the first port of call as they're the gods and knowledge of all that is streaming in the end, and in terms of your audience they encapsulate the kinds of people that enjoy watching streams, so they're important. After all that? Well it really depends on which communities you see success with, you then cater and continue working with them. Beneficially after the initial "research" phase you don't have to mention PS2 unless asked because it's in the business name, so you're promoting to them anyway, they'll google it. In short. "Market research", promoting PS2 within > Individual streaming of content based on activities set up with them > Catered content based on successes The key is all in research though, know the community before addressing them, not taking the time to learn what the community is like, what their etiquette is, what the faux pas' are and so on is a very, very bad idea. I just feel like you're preaching to the choir a little bit here. Even if there's some new folks, it's not a huge number yet, and in terms of value content to show off to them there's not much until you get beta access, and it really depends on whether you're allowed to produce content from the beta too. EDIT: Zulthus, ah yes, but in order to get partnership you've got to rake in those views, none-partnered youtube channels that are promoting themselves aren't exempt from the concept of it being for revenue. Plenty of good feedback there.
Edit: and to be honest, I'm actually quite surprised. Usually, Skit can be a loooot more... Blunt ? Of course, you'll never get grilled as with Firefly who would burn you alive with kerosene on the spot but Skit usually is quite... knacky. Anyways, I'm glad to see he can provide great feedback when he is not clubbing someone to dust with PS TR HA armorfists. Last edited by sylphaen; 2012-04-05 at 08:42 PM. |

Nah, don't worry about any kind of derailment, I'm not here to shoot anyone down and I doubt Skit is either.
IMO, running a community-based project is a lot about being open and sharing with others and giving them opportunities to share with you. Look at PSU, Hamma gave his heart to this project. He sacrificed a lot of time effort, resources to start and stick with his project. He stayed open all the time and that's why a lot of us love him and respect him. (no worries Jennyboo, I'm a guy ) IMO, if you had started a thread to collect all the footage currently available along with yours, it would: - have helped even more - Skitrel wouldn't have jumped on your case I can understand why Skit jumped on you. There is revenue associated to linking videos and # of people watching them so posting only your vids feels very much like leaching. Kind of like how some website took PS2 exclusive images from PSU for their website and did not credit PSU (correct me if I'm mistaken, Hamma). As a general rule of thumb, give credit where credit is due, respect the people and they will return the favor. By the way, I do not post this to flame you. You are a very enthusiastic guy and it's a cool idea to centralize known media content in a single post. It could have been done better though but hey, everyone makes mistakes. So no biggie. EDIT: for instance, would you mind adding this to your post ? http://www.gametrailers.com/game/planetside-2/15161 Last edited by sylphaen; 2012-04-05 at 08:29 PM. |
