You guys might have heard these complaints before so I'm sorry if this is redundant but I'd like to hear your opinions about this stuff.
I'm a long time PS1 player and haven't really been super actively following PS2. I am incredibly excited for this game but I try not to get overly excited about games that aren't out yet... So I'm sure most of you guys know more about PS2 than me. Anyway, getting to the point. I have two major concerns about this game based on what I've heard/seen so far. I think the game looks stunning, and as awesome as that is it has me concerned because I'm worried that I won't be able to run it, and even if I can run it Planetside is obviously a community game so drastically limiting the player base due to system requirements even hurts the players who can run the game. Do you think the game will be optimized amazingly well because it seems that it would take some sort of miracle to have a game this good looking run well on anything but a super computer in big fights. My second concern has to do with latency. Anyone who played planetside 1 knows what warping is. People sliding all over your screen due to latency was one of the more annoying things in PS1 and it got to the point where it seemed like half of the best players had bad connections or did something to limit their connections. I saw some of this in the alpha gameplay videos which makes me really concerned. If people are warping around when connected to only 50 or so players who are essentially right next to them, can we expect even worse at launch? I fully understand that the game is in Alpha, but I'm still worried. Do you think the warping in the videos is a bug or something? Or do you think its a necessary evil to deal with the latency problems that result from thousands of people connecting to the same server? P.S. if you want to see what I'm talking about take a look at around 1:58 in this video: |

This is alpha as you stated. I don't see any reason to be thinking it will be like this at release. We likely haven't even seen optimized Nvidia drivers for the game or even developer optimizations for performance.

1) it isn't yet optimised and I have heard numerous times that they want people to be able to run this on even 5 year old PC's. Obviously it will look no where near as good as it does in the videos but you should be able to run it.
2) The latency issues are an alpha thing. The latency issues will be sorted. This is why they are going to have a beta. |

we don´t even know if they used full scale server hardware, or some temporary or internal substitute, and propably a lot of the players in that demonstration were playing over the same connection. and as it has been stated a lot, we were already told, that the optimization wasn´t done yet.
the devs are totally aware of the problems ps1 had, and they took the challange to fix this. if they thought, these issues would be invincible and they couldn´t fix this, they would not have taken the risk of pumping millions of dollars into the developement of this game. after all they got a decade of experience and data now to work with. about the system requirements... i´m worried, too. but they told us, 4-5 year old gaming pcs would do the job. the videos and screenshots are certainly maxed out settings and we will have options to tweak it down.

As mentioned above, Higby recent stated that they hadn't done ANY optimization yet, so footage we've seen so far is actually quite remarkable. With some time before beta here and then months of further streamlining, I suspect we'll end up with some very good netcode.
