Mission # 451 continued....

Carl
-----------------------------------------------
Carl, a semi-loyal solider of the New Conglomerate, had been engaging in one of his primary pastimes, namely sleeping off a hang-over he had gotten from one of his other primary pastimes. Now one can not get drunk in the barracks, the officers frown on that, so he had done so in one of the storage rooms under the base, where he could get sauced up in peace. But now something had interrupted his slumber. It felt like an earth quake. Then the lights went out. A few choice four letter words came to Carl's lips as he stumbled around in the darkness looking for his lamp. After a moment he gave up and, picking up his new and unused Gauss Rifle, stumbled out of the room.
It was a while before Carl managed to get out of the dark hall ways and into some that at least had their emergency lights on. Further on he came to one of the old vehicle bays, inside the massive room were several half constructed lightings, and a nearly completed Vanguard tank. But what was more important to Carl was the small medical box up on the walk way, and all he had to do to get the pain killers inside that would cure his hang over, or at least make the headache part of it go away, was climb the ladder, and do so half drunk. It took Carl a moment or twelve but he finally got up onto the grated walk way and over to the medical box. But unfortunately for Carl, several other members of the New Dawn were overly fond of pain killers and all that the box contained was some medical tape and a few dirty magazines. Carl chose a select few of the latter for closer inspection at a later date. Carl was getting ready to challenge the ladder once more, this time in descent, when he spotted a figure that looked like it was trying to be stealthy. A figure in purple armor. Now Carl had some serious doubts about the heterosexuality of several of his comrades in arms, and himself and his friend Wookie had beaten up a few of the more likely suspects, but none of them had done something so gay as to put on purple armor and go sneaking around the base. Damn poofter. But then Carl's keen eyes caught something else; the man had a medical pouch at his waist, and likely had pain killers in that pouch. Soon he would be a dead poofter.

Tobias
--------------------------------------------------
A wall of fire and shrapnel flew towards Tobias, the building he stood on exploded. And a moment before the flames and flak hit him, just as he began to fall, his personal field activated. The commando he had been fighting did not have a shield, but Tobias doubted he was dead. The roof cracked and then collapsed, Tobias going down with it. Flames shot up all around him, and his ears rang with the sound of explosions. He was not sure where he was, or where Dio or the others were. Well he would find where he was and worry about the others later, they could take care of themselves. A burning building, that much was obvious. The roof was off, but looking up he saw that they had also broken a hole in the floor and he was now in a basement of some kind. Tobias had dropped his bolt driver a while back, and was out of ammunition for his Beamer, but he had his trusty Cycler, taken from a dead Terran Republic member. Tobias took another moment to look around, then spotting a door half blocked by a long steel beam. He could squeeze though.
Tobias crept through the corridors, silent as a mouse, until he came to, of all things, a map of this area of the base. The nearest exit to the YOU ARE HERE dot seemed to be in a vehicle bay a few passages away. It was to that location that Tobias headed.
It took Tobby several minutes to reach the bay, and after glancing inside to see if the coast was clear he began to sneak across the floor to the doors he saw on the other side of the bay. It was slightly before he heard the shots that the first sliver of metal ripped though his armor, entering in his back, punching a hole in his left lung, and then emerging though his chest, followed quite soon by allot of blood. Tobias spun and leapt to the side as more slivers began to tear up the machinery around him. Then his Cycler roared to life. Tobias usually was one for short controlled bursts, but as his lungs began to flood with blood and his vision blurred he decided on Spray and Prey. Then he was hit again, and again. Tobias went down, and though he thought he might be able to crawl or even get up again, he decided to lay there.
It was a moment later that his assailant appeared, climbing clumsily down a ladder from the walk way above. He stumbled over to Tobias muttering something about queers. The man slung his gun over his shoulder and, drawing his knife, bent to finish the Job. Tobias took the opportunity to bring his Cycler back up, pointing it at his assailants face, and then he pulled the trigger. It was after he heard a number of clicks rattle off that he became aware of two things, one that the spray and pray tactic was indeed always useless, and two that he was screwed.

Carl
-------------------------------------------------------------
Carl could not help but laugh as the queer little man pointed his empty gun at him, and the shocked expression on the mans face when he did not kill Carl. Well, He would finish the poofter with his Gauss, and unslung the rifle to do just that. Carl was preparing to shoulder and fire when the pansy reached to his bracer and pressed several buttons then held his finger over a last one.
"Wait!" the Man said.
Carl shoulders his rifle, ignoring him.
"Wait! If you shoot I will detonate the explosives in my pack, and we will both die."
Carl took a moment to consider this. He really was not to keen on dieing, but he was pretty sure the purple man was lying. But if he wasn't that could be bad things for Carl. But he wanted those pain killers.
"Gimme that med pouch queer boy, else I am gonna give you a new eye hole." Carl told the man.
"I cant, if I move my hand you will shot me, and if I let you get close enough to take it you will push my hand away and shot me." the man explained.
"I want that pouch, I wont shoot you, scouts honor" Carl lied.
"Well, as you can see I am dieing, I don't think I will last more then a few more minutes, and if you are around when I start to go I am gonna blow myself, but if you let me die in peace you can come and take the pouch from my corpse."
"How do I know you wont blow yourself up just to spite me, I did kill you after all."
"I wont, you have my word as an officer" the man told him.
"Ok, I will give you five minutes to die, then I am coming back for my pouch, got it? And if your not dead by then I am gonna shoot you, bomb or no." Carl told him.
"I will be sure to die while you are gone." the man said.
"You do that." Carl answered, and with that he backed off and then left, going only a little ways around the corner to wait.

Tobias
-------------------------------------------------------------
Tobias watched the New Conglomerate solider round the corner and quickly moved to his medical pouch and began to treat his wounds. He could hardly believe his bluff had worked. But one does not question luck. It took Tobias about four minutes to stabilize himself to the point where he would not die, then, with quite a bit of pain, Tobby limped over to one of the half completed lightnings and crawled inside to continue his treatment. It was about a minute later that he heard the New Conglomerate troop enter the room, and after seeing Tobias had vanished the solider went in to a screaming fit about not being able to trust queers further then you could throw them, and not even that far as some of them were quite small. Mixed into this was such an assortment of four letter words that Tobias's vocabulary of such words expanded quite a bit. After the man had run of breath from his swearing and thrown or broken everything in the room he could he seemed to move on. Tobias used a small mirror from one of his pouches to survey the area outside, and assuring himself that the man was gone, finished his medical treatments of himself and then lay back to take a few minutes to rest. His eyes closed, and with the drowsiness from loss of blood and the meds, much against his will Tobias was soon sleeping silently as a baby.

Ranger

In response to Cloaking technology possessed by the Vanu and now apparently the Terran Republic, lead scientists from both the New Dawn and BOHICA outfits had begun research on a method to detect infiltrators, as the traditional motion and sound detectors were proving increasingly useless. The result was the DARKLIGHT project. Though greatly reducing normal vision it allowed the user of the tech to see cloaked individuals. Only three proto type pairs of goggles existed for it, and members of the New Dawn had requested them for research as a possible implant. Ranger was the BOHICA representative who was at the New Dawn base to ensure that everything went over smoothly and that it did not fall into the wrong hands. Things had gone well until a few hours ago, when they began to lose contact with several of the further ranging scouts and patrols. A storm system developing in the east might have interrupted the radio communications, but Ranger did not think so. Then the base came under attack. Attack by Vanu. The numbers were unknown, but it appeared at least one was a Cloaker. A perfect opportunity to test the Darklight goggles as well as capture an intact cloak field generator, something the New Conglomerate had not yet done. So Ranger had taken one of the three goggles and followed the others on the trail of the infiltrator.
Ranger located the cloaker lurking outside the door to the command center. It had been lowering it's pistol to shot him when he rounded the corner, but, as he could see it with the Dark Light vision, he got off the first shot. And the effect of unloading all three barrels of the Jackhammer into a person at close range was terrible indeed. The things midriff was almost completely blown away. But what was left was disturbing, and what happened after that even more so. Its insides were not only flesh, blood, and bone, but also a mess of wires and steel. And moments after the blast tore it a new one, the creatures flesh began to reconstruct its self. Bone began to knit and muscle tissue pulled back together. It was healing far faster then the best medical technology could allow. And even though it had been nearly blown in half and had likely lost more then ninety percent of its blood it still some how lived. What ever that was it was not Human. And so Rangers conviction in the evilness of the Vanu and the Vileness of their experiments was reinforced.
The creature, though healing rapidly, was still unconscious. Ranger walked over to it and with a yank removed its helm, drawing his Mag-Cutter in with his other hand in the same motion, his intent to remove its head. But when he removed the mask he saw something that shocked him. It was not an evil looking monster, but the face of a young girl. Ranger would not place her at more then fourteen years of age. But Ranger knew this was not a true girl. No, he had not just killed someone young enough to be his daughter, but a Vanu construct, a monster, an abomination. But it did not look like an abomination, it did not look like a monster. It looked like a young girl. Ranger called up several more soldiers and told them to remove her weapons and put the corpse in a cell, he would take some more men and deal with the other intruders. If they had the same regenitive powers as this one they could all be in for a good deal of trouble. Shortly after the girl was imprisoned in the cell block behind a field of stunning and impassable energy that he was informed she was up and moving about her cell. It was about five minutes after that when the explosions came. Then the lights went out. Ranger felt pity for the guards who were in that cell block.
Ranger was forcing two of the invaders into a trap. They would soon have to either face the enemy force chasseing them threw the hallways of the central barrack and munitions building, or they would have to leave the building and come out onto the roof or fourth floor landing, and with dozens of troops and several MAX units Ranger would be waiting. He did not have to wait to long, for, guns blazing, the pair soon came out of the building onto the roof. A rocklet between the two sent them both rolling and separated them. Ranger closed in with the shorter of the pair, though both were fairly small. Kicking the mans Suppressor out of his hands Ranger attempted to bring his Mag-Scatter up for an easy point blank kill, but the man had other ideas, and dodging to the side grabbed his arm and quite painfully broke it in two places. The fight for Ranger went down hill from there. Ranger was a skilled hand to hand combatant, but he did not have a knife, and the Vanu commando did. Several cuts and less then a minute later the game changed. An explosive round went into the storage area of the next building area over. It landed next to several crates of explosives. Ranger saw the wall of flame fly towards him and leapt of the building, bounding off the wall half way down and going into a roll as he hit the ground. God his arm hurt after that one. Ranger Moaned as he rolled onto his side and cradled his broken limb. He had been saved from the inferno, but now, if his heads up display was correct, he had a badly broken arm, which the fall and roll had not helped much. Ranger bit back his pain and sat up, giving him a clearer view of the area.
Over a dozen dead troops from bullet wounds, and half as many as that dead from the blast, half that many that he could see anyway. He was sure more lay dead or dieing on top of the building. Night had fallen and now the powerless base was shrouded in darkness, only the light of burning corpses gave illumination. Ranger checked his bearings and headed towards the medical station. Even with their record, the staff there would be a comfort to his wounds.

Jessana

Green fields, a plastic disc spins through the air, and the dog, Rico by name, runs and catches it in mid-air. Victoria claps happily and Jessana runs to get it from him so she can throw it again. Under the shade of a tree the girl's parents, all four scientists for the Terran Republic, stand talking near a picnic lunch. But the matters of their discussion were not as happy as the atmosphere around them. All four had been part of the original team working with the Vanu ruins and artifacts found on Araxius. All four had helped with the initial and miraculous discoveries. They new the impact of what they had found, and along with three other colleagues had been preparing a full report of their findings and what they saw could come of them when they were ordered to stop research of the Vanu technologies and return all artifacts to the governments special services with all possible haste, the artifacts that could, with time, vastly improve the lives of humans everywhere were detailed for termination. They would not let this come to pass. But all of this was un important to the two young children and the happy dog out in the field. But then all that changed.
A Galaxy Military Transport appeared in the eastern skies, not all that uncommon these days it seemed, but this one headed strait for them. The four under the tree were a little worried, their thoughts must be known to the special services, but it was likely coming to pick them up and rush them off to work on some project, they were after all some of the most respected minds in their fields. Then as the Transport came closer they realized it would not pick them up. The Transports 20mm cannons opened up, spewing depleted uranium shells at the scattering scientists, and the same shells at the children, their could be no witness's. More shells ripped apart the family civilian transport they had taken here. Jessana felt a slight presser, then her young teenage body felt no more. The bright summer day faded slowly to black, and replacing a careless world of walks in the fields and the drama for the local academy was one of pain, horrifying memories, and cold steel.
The man from the Vanu Sovereignty had come late, and when he did he saw the death, their were no survivors, or so he thought, but shielded under her mothers body lay a girl, her body penetrated in three places. She was near death, but the Vanu technology could save her, and with her he returned to the base of the Vanu.
Jessana would not see light save the sterile rays of the operating room for six long years. When she next stepped out into the suns young rays she was not a careless thirteen year old she had been, though she did not look a day older then the day her family died, she was a killing machine, her strength so enhanced that she could dent composite armor with a blow, able to heal mortal wounds in less time then it took others to stop a nose bleed, the list of enhancements and modifications that she had went on and on, and she had only lost three things, three things many Vanu would give willingly for what she had received, namely her childhood, her identity, and her soul. The cost was high, but it did not seem so when you remembered nothing of those things before, for such memories were buried to deep. But what is lost can be found. In the depths of her mind Jessana found something she had long forgotten, and then something's she had forced herself to forget. The childhood came back, but so did that which followed it. The inhuman experiments, the death of her parents, the harsh programming, but mostly what came back was the pain. It took the pain of death to dredge up these memories, and with them came the memories of all the pain she had felt before. But then her eyes flickered open. She was alive, and in a cell of some sort. But behind her, in the back of her mind old memories better forgotten and a world of pain that should have never been stayed even after the darkness fled. Well, she would bury these memories of her pain with the pain of others. Currently Trapped in her cell she could do little, but opportunity would come Knocking. It always did.

Kiwi
--------------------------------------------------
Kiwi ducked though yet another door, going deeper into the facility, and hoping against hope that he could out run the troopers that Sasha and himself had ran into. He was a skilled commando, able to easily defeat a few standard troops in combat, but he preferred to be away from the action in a nice safe and armored tank, surrounded by allies, and being alone in an enemy base hunted by elite commando's was pretty close to what he thought hell would be like. With only the rare red glow of an emergency light to guide him Kiwi soon became lost in the maze of tunnels bellow the base. Once he realized he was lost, and basically in a maze, Kiwi sat down to take a moment and analyze his situation. He has a suppresser with three clips left for it, a beamer with one full energy pack, his REK tool, and several explosive charges. First off he knew he had to get out of the tunnels, because if he did not hack the command console then the reinforcements would not arrive, and he would die here. Kiwi had an aversion to dieing. You could get out of any maze by following the right wall, he remembered that, and with that information started off. It took Kiwi half an hour but he reached a lift, unfortunately an unpowered one, but with a little difficulty he climbed the lifts cables and reached the ground floor of the building. Creeping down the passage way from the lift Kiwi poked his head out and looked around. It was a vehicle bay, and the New Dawn members looked to be preparing to take several of the Vanguards out to help detour the attackers. Kiwi tossed a small package containing a high explosive charge and a detonator set moments before for twelve seconds by the nearest ammo dump and ducked back behind the door. A little under a dozen seconds later an explosion followed by more then a few more explosions of varying magnitude told Kiwi he had been successful. He gave a moment for things to cool down before ducking out, and with a quick burst dropped the guard who had peeked in to see what had happened, then dashed to a door opposite the one the trooper had entered. Kiwi found little more trouble on his way to the Command center, just a few guards that he dispatched with ease. At the command center he managed to activate several terminals and gain partial system access despite burns to much of the gear. With the camera's he was able to locate Jessana as well. Well, he would do what he could to help her while he worked on getting enough power to gain full control of the base.

Dio
--------------------------------------------------
The Mission Commander was worried. It had been dark around the tank that had served as his shelter and he had assumed the multitude of corpses had been from the fight himself and Tobias had put up and the resulting explosion. It had not occurred to his medicine dulled mind at the time that they had not killed near that many, and that even if they had, if all his fellows were dead, why had the New Dawn not restored power and looked after their dead? Well because something was still killing them, and thus they had not had time. And, as he reached the first building the sounds of muffled gun fire from elsewhere in the compound confirmed that something was still out there. Dio looked around to see if he was watched then cautiously entered the building.
Medical Bay 02 Read the sign painted by the entrance to the door. The once grey walls were now stained a color not unlike that of the sign with blood. Dio was pretty sure this was not a good sign. In most cases Dio's common since would have told him to leave the building, considering that the blood was fresh and all, but this was a medical bay, and that meant medical supplies that he needed. Drawing his beamer Dio went further into the building.
The Guards in the medical bay were unarmored and carried only the AMP pistol, who ever had killed them had an easy time of it. They had for the most part been killed with well placed surgical instruments thrown at high velocity. The blood on the walls had seeped though the floor and then onto said walls from the floor above where most of the killing had taken place. But the whole place sickened Dio. Blood and gore was splattered about everywhere, corpses lay where they fell, cooling in pools of their own congealing blood. One fact that particularly disturbed Dio was that all the corpses lacked one thing, namely their eyes. The Team leader was sure his dreams were going to be very unpleasant for a long time following this mission. It was on the second floor that Dio encountered his biggest surprise.
Sitting in with her back to him in a blood soaked tee shirt that looked a few sizes to big and a pair of loose fitting white boxers was a young girl, one leg dangling off the table she sat on. Her short black hair was sticky with blood as well. The room had once held many of the more critically injured members of the New Dawn, and with their fondness for shotguns and only decent training, the New Dawn rarely had a shortage of people for this room. The corpses were pilled in one corner of the room, and like the others, were eyeless.
"Dio." The girl said, still not facing him.
"How-" Dio began to ask how she new he was there, he had been moving very slowly and quietly, or so he thought. A better question would be how she knew it was him.
"Your smell."
"Oh." Dio responded, not quite understanding how she could smell anything between the sterile sent of the hospital and the coppery stench of blood.
"Why the eyes Jess?" Dio asked after a few moments of silence.
"My body was weak, they nearly killed me Dio, I needed protein and energy, and eyes have allot of both without all the extra stuff. Get the most with each bite. They are a bit salty though." Jessana told Dio, still not looking at him.
Dio had been felling sick to his stomach, but Jessana's last comment nearly made him gag. What was wrong with her? And how could she eat eyes to rapidly replenish her strength? So far as he knew Jessana did not have any implants. It was probably best not to ask, it was that way with most of the things about shadow operatives.
"Have, have you seen any of the others?" Dio asked. He was sure they were dead, but he had been sure Jessana was dead too.
"No, but someone was opening allot of the doors for me, and the defenses went postal on some New Con's in the courtyard a while ago. Saved my bacon." Jessana told him.
"That does not make since, the powers out, has been for hours, no Nitrate either." Dio began
"Doesn't does it? Probably some auxiliary power else where. Who knows, who cares? Don't kick a gift horse in the ass as Tobby would say." Jess countered
"Where's your armor, why the poorly fitting clothes?" Dio said, not wanting to argue with her.
"I don't remember, I don't remember most of the mission though. I don't remember allot of things."
"Its not important, are there any medical supplies in the building?" Dio asked
"Yea, right this way." Jessana said sliding off the table.
"Dio?" Jessana said as they left the room.
"Yea?"
"We are the good guys right?"
"Yea...yea we are the good guys." Dio said, puzzled by the young girls question and not at all sure of the truth of his answer as he once was.

To be continued.
