I played PS from day 1 and loved it, I wasnt a fan or core combat or BFRs but I always dreamed of seeing Naval Warfare.
The way I see this happening is that off each continent instead of a foothold each side should have an aircraft carrier style home base. These things would be larger than a base and fully capable of spawning Galaxy Dropships, all aircraft and even amphibious assault boats which can carry 1 vehicle like a tank ect, as well as troops of course. The carriers would have immense automated defence turrets but were still open to attack (though you would expect zero chance of victory and heavy losses in a short amount of time) So when you are pushed off a continet you have to organise a full invasion of landing craft with air cover. invasions would obviously need to be organised correctly so the hull of the carrier would have a huge internal dock enough to fit a few outfits. Then instead of being handed a nice convenient foothold you have to fight to establish one just like in any real war. Would also give the game more fluid feel because your attack would not always come from the expected foothold as your carrier circles the continent you can plan where and when to launch your invasion[s]. This could then later be expanded to a naval section of the game where island maps have shipyards and you can spawn small warships (say3 man like a lib) that can mine, AA fire, Missle attack, basically lots of variants. Just a thought. Well like I said before a dream! Thanks Last edited by Valkar; 2012-06-13 at 08:17 AM. |

I love the idea... BUT
I wouldn't work. Mostly because of the reliance on aircraft. See with a foothold you can literally fight your way out of a foothold inches by inch, where as a carrier you'd need overwhelming fighter numbers to reach land and even then the enemy would be waiting with AA. A relatively small number of enemies could ruin your day. I could certainly get behind carriers used as bases. |

It's obvious that most people want an alternative to the footholds, but just need a decent solution with similar utility.
It's a possibility that they will add naval combat one day, but I think orbital space station sanctuaries with drop-pod launch systems are the best solution to the foothold problem right now. Making naval carriers would entail the need to create all manner of naval vehicles and that just won't happen before launch. |

This reminds me a bit of the Titans from Battlefield 2142.
For those who don't know, they were giant flying battleships equipped with large amounts of guns, airships, and drop pods. They were also pilot-able (yes, it could be moved; and yes 2 of them could sit next to each other trying to destroy each other). Would be a cool system if they got it working in PS2, but enemy flight divisions would be able to camp outside your ship (ever had an aircraft camp the vehicle spawn in PS1? annoying right?) |

Magriders can hover over water. Do you see a potential problem here?
They would just camp on the middle of the ocean and take potshots at the carrier while gunning down aircraft...and the aircraft could only hurt them with direct hits (you cant shoot into water and expect a blast radius), remember, the magriders can strafe too... I mean, I don't mind, I'm VS after all |

Why not make it so the carriers have huge cannons that could shoot both heavy artilery shells or drop-pods at the coast?
Just nuke the hell out of whatever landing zone is in range and then start shooting people/vehicles ashore. (edit) Seriously though:
With some limitations of course, teleporting anywhere in range anytime would be bad. Nothing wrong with it having a theme other than space though, and maybe making it phisicaly accessible from the continent (naval base, aerial base, etc) could help limit it's range, making it a little more predictable where they might try to reenter the map (e.g. they could only launch drop-pods halfway across the continent from their current position). This can easily work since they already kind of do it in Battlefield 3. Some maps the US starts on the Aircraft carrier..
It wouldn't translate easily into PS2 but it can just as easily be a great alternative to those strongholds. I honestly think having those giant domes aren't very creatively thought out. A airship/carrier would make a lot more sense. |

I really see naval warfare as a kind of mid to endgame. Instead of these being designated they could be bought by outfits to travel by sea between, or around continents to stage an invasion. Get rid of all that blank space in-between, and add naval warfare. Warpgates would still exist, but sea travel would offer more stealth. To prevent these ships from being all powerful. each would be fully capture-able or sinkable with weak points, and a great resource cost to maintain. See here-(http://www.planetside-universe.com/s...d.php?p=701513) Instead of carriers as footholds how about space stations. See here-http://www.planetside-universe.com/s...ad.php?t=42324)
This would allow the needed distance from spawn, and make greater use of the warpgates. Last edited by berzerkerking; 2012-06-15 at 11:03 AM. |
