Please don't artificially throttle back the graphics.

There are default settings for a reason, to make the game look the best it can while being able to run on the most amount of systems. If you look at the Steam survey and even from what CCP have said, the Nvidia 560 is th emost popular GPU atm. So the default settings should really use that card as the benchmark.

However I find it really annoying as someone who loves to build PCs each year that there is nothing out there really that pushes my PCs other than bad optimization. We've seen in the past of graphical settings being kept back because people whine that they cannot max out the game on their shitty PC. Well I just think tough, the game looks great on default settings most probably and in a couple years when you have a new PC you'll be able to max the game out. However for people like myself who puts most their money into this hobby, I want to be able to turn everything up.

There are setting sliders for a reason, if you cannot max the game out then turn them down. Don't throttle everyone else back just because of a few whiners on the forums who cannot handle knowing their game isn't maxed out. Often these people lead to bad PR for a game and then you see the next game come out where they make no effort to push the boundaries. We've seen it with Crytek and Rockstar alone and I think I even remember Planetside had high resolution textures, you took them out and put them back in at a later date.

Thanx!

I think (and hope) that this is the case!! people running average equipment shouldn't be the benchmark for the highest settings (myself included). I might be running a 570 now but When I have spare cash in the future I don't want the game to look exactly the same on a 680 simply because they aimed to make me happy with my 570

I see what you're saying but what you believe isn't necessarily good for business. Money is what spins this game, no matter how much Higby and the guys like to spin it; SOE runs the shoe and they're motivated by that proverbial fat cash.

When Crysis came out, everyone took a nose dive in their wallet trying to run the game flatout; and it was great for those who like you enjoy spending their money on it. However afterwards, they realized that just those corefans buying it alone wont put bread on the table.

So to avoid the long book I'll write Ill just say this; they will make the game to run as optimally as it can for as many different computers as they can. This isn't a single player campaign. The engine will be optimized to look beautiful on as many different types of rigs as possible so that every single one of those good or SHITTY rigs will log on and say "hey cool I can buy some armor" and MAKE THEM SOME MONEY.

If you're looking for a game to push the boundaries of modern visuals ingame; this isn't the game you're looking for. However if you don't give a fuck and want a great looking game that everyone can enjoy and shoot the shit out of each other in large scale epic combat; then most likely this game is for you.

Especially with this type of game, you want as many players in it as possible.

Obviously, I don't think that older comps should (or can from what I've seen and heard) run the game at full settings (at least not well), but I think the design philosophy they've stated is to make the game look great on lower settings, and add to it for those that want to take advantage of more powerful PCs. As opposed to designing it for high-end systems and then drawing it back for others.

The main concern I have for graphics is their desired weather systems. They want weather to have an "equal" impact for all players and to not be something that can be turned off. Quite frankly I'm not sure how they would really pull that off without having some very basic weather effects at the core that might effect the fidelity on higher-end systems.

Higby already stated that the reason we won't have weather at launch is so that he can perfect it and make sure that people can't turn it off.
I'd give you a link, but i forgot what AGN it was. Those podcast are way to long for me to remember(not that I complain)

^ what he said

Yeah from what I remember (and again, I'm not a computer guy -- I just have them for the games LIKE PLANETSIDE 2!!!!) Higby said that the game will run beautifully on the soup'd up comps but can still be run on the lower settings on machines that are upwards of 5 years old. So yeah I guess I'm not too worried about it personally, I think they got it covered. Unless I entirely don't understand what it is you're asking cause I'm pretty much a comp noob.

I see, that's good to know, I figured they wouldn't be able to get the weather system they described easily anyway.

Personally from what they've shown in alpha the game looks fantastic already, so I don't think that throttling is a concern. That said, they've been showing it on high specs to show off, so I'd be interested in seeing what it looks like at lowest settings, and how much of a difference those settings make overall.

More of a discussion topic than an idea... but I can't agree with you more. I'll upgrade when it all gets cheap, and that might happen by the time the game releases. Default will still be great.

Personally I think i'd rather have another x thousand people to play with than extra detailed grass/tree's that look pretty and are rapidly ignored when chasing targets.

Anyone wanting good visuals over better gameplay does rather need their head examining.

I have a highly awesome computer so this isn't from the angle of a guy wanting to get to play it on a crappy rig. Hell, even my laptop will be man enough for this unless they go super extreme on the graphics from (i5, 8gb, 5870M). There's no need to go crazy on the eye candy just to cater to enthusiasts who want something that will "test their machine to the limits" or something. Certainly not if it's at the expense of making it unplayable on older (but still decent) kit.

It was one reason the first game failed: Poorly advertised, sure, but it needed a broadband connection when they weren't common and a truely mighty computer to run it. I remember having to grab a ram upgrade purely to run it without large amounts of stutter and my computer was no slouch to begin with.

Who cares about the graphics? Game play is where the focus should be. There is a reason why Minecraft is one of the biggest selling games around. And it aint graphics i can tell you that for sure.

If the gameplay is good, then stuff the graphics I say.
