The College/University/Post Secondary Thread

Just putting this out there for any one whos gone through, going through, or planning on going to college/university/whatever.

Just put what you studied/are studying/planning to study, and why.

I just graudated from Fleming College in Ontario with a 3 year diploma in Business Admin - International Trade, and now now I'm entering into Ryersons Bachelor Of Commerce - Economics and Management Science program through the direct entry option (if you have a 3 year college diploma, you can get into the 3rd year of a b.com program).

I studied international trade because I liked the idea of international business and commerce, and I thought it would be interesting working in that are of business. The program turned out to be too much about filling out forms, and submitting documents, and not business. I couldnt see my self working in a position where all I would do is fill out documents and arrange truck shipments.

A couple of the courses we had to take were Micro and Macro economics, and I really enjoyed them. Since then I have read quite a bit in my spare time on the topic. I decided to study it because I realized that a B. Comm in Economics would help me reach my career goals, and I also like the subject. (I Prefer Micro to Macro, but you gotta take the bad with the good.)

So how about you guys?

University of Helsinki, studying theology. 2 years done, ~3 to go. Going for master's degree.

Why? Well, the finnish lutheran church requires master's degree in theology from all it's priests (which is in a way funny, as the university theology is neutral and doesnt teach what the church teaches). I had other plans for my future, but due to medical reasons I can no longer go through with any of those plans, so I decided to go for this career which I had thought about long ago.

While I find many of the topics fascinating even on their own, I probably wouldn't go through with this if it wasn't a requirement for said job.

B.A. in Animation from Cal State Northridge. Nice campus, some professors were really effective, some just knew their subject well but couldn't teach well. A few professors just didn't get it, and wasted student's time and money and effort as a result.

In America... Unless you can go to college on grants or scholarships, or do most of it in Community College at a reasonable price, just skip it. The ability for one to pay off their loans, even for a B.A., is getting considerably more difficult year by year. Remember that grans and loans start coming through more easily later on (24 years old, IIRC) so if you plan for higher education, plan to do it then.

Physics with Space Research - University of Birmingham, UK.

Why? It's what I was good at, but didn't have any long term goals and have ended up a Science teacher.

Electronic Media - University of Northern Iowa. I should only have 1 year left. I need to get an internship, but I'm having a difficult time getting anybody to respond to me. No Internship = No Degree

I do a lot of audio recording. I'm in two bands, and I'm working on my fourth record right now. I'll be working on a fifth record later this summer. I also record other bands as well. I do some video work because that is much more likely to land me a job. What I've learned in terms of 'technical skills' have all come from my own experience. Considering grad school, but I don't want to go into more debt and I would probably be overeducated for many jobs in media. Yes, that sounds stupid, but you can actually be overeducated. Unless I go straight for a PHD (which isn't completely out of the question), I'll probably just stick to my undergrad, live out of my parents basement, and work at Pizza Hut until I can get a real job.

I'm obviously really confident in the job market.

I'm not too picky on jobs. As long as it relates, I'm okay with it. I'd do anything from video/audio production to something like social media management or advertising or even live/stage productions.

Belgium: started off with a BA in Digital Arts and Entertainment, major in programming.
And currently polishing that off with a master in industrial engineering.
Also have 2 years of applied economics under my belt but never finished that one, silly exchange rates: if I want money, I'll drill into the vault, nyah!

I will be starting my P1 year of pharmacy school this August at Wingate University. I studied chemistry at Campbell University this past few years; upon acceptance into pharmacy school, I decided to take that route instead of finishing up my chem degree. I ended up a semester short of my degree but being that I am 25, about to turn 26 in a couple weeks, waiting another year to start what my ultimate goal was in the first place, pharm school, was unfeasible.

Finished University of Pharmacy. Working as intern atm so I'll be able to take State exam after which I will get a license for independent work and membership at the Pharmacist Council.

I wish you luck, just don't give up even if it seems hard at the times. It's still worth it... the demand on the market is usually high (especially if you're male) unlike for chemists where you can end up sitting at home unemployed for months with no prospect to get a long term employment anywhere as some of my friends did.

Biochem undergrad, Neuro PhD, now doing Med.

I just kind of fell into med. Took me 12 years to realize being a scientist was great fun, but not good enough as a profession.
