why do the MAX units from PS1 look the way they do ???

the TR MAX looks like an egg with pogo sticks on both arms
the NC MAC looks like a cereal box with a vacuum cleaner in one hand
the VS max looks cooler but the weapon it carries kinda looks like luggage
