An outfit is basically a clan or a tribe. The people in the outfit have to make squads and platoons.

Nope. You could just have everyone by themselves going off to war, or all squads, or all platoons, or a mix and match of all of that, etc, etc.

Repeat after me, I will not make fun of newbish questions anymore. Ok.
Outfit-Unlimited members, permanent, ranks, insignia
Platoon-Up to 30 members, 3 squads, not permanent
Squad-10 members, not permanent

If you are in an outfit, you can make squads and platoons with people in or out of your outfit. You can be in a squad, but not an outfit. You have to be in a squad to be in a platoon. You can be in an outfit, but not a squad or platoon.

culkid your not getting the idea of squads and platoons.

An outfit, is as you know, basically a guild or clan. How you organise it is up to you.

A squad is a temporary group of people formed with a goal in mind, this may be to get BEP or it may be to cap a base.

Squads(the equivalent to a group in DAoC or Everquest or other MMO games) can be organised on the fly, for instance when you load up the game, unless you are going solo, you will be looking for a squad to join.

You dont have to form a squad with your outfit mates, you can be in a squad with anyone. It is not permanent, you can leave at any time and when you log off or go link dead you will be removed from the squad.

Platoons are just squads that have linked up to share command experience between the 3 commanders.

*Sigh*
Sorry to say mikkyT and Flameseeker, but squads and platoons are permanent.
There are non-permanent squads and non-permanent platoons. But those are only used for quick battles, when not all of your team mates aren't online.

Permanent squads and platoons are going to be more common.

Sorry to say RCB_Ghost, squads and platoons are not permanent. Outifts are permanent, and are the equivalent to FPS Clans and RPG Guilds. Squads can be joined and left on the fly, and are the equivalent to RPG groups, there are currently no FPS games to which the term group can apply to.

From http://www.planetside-universe.com/c...hp?p=sdFAQInfo
How many people make up a squad?
Up to 10 people make up a squad. Three squads make up a platoon.

What is a platoon?
A platoon is three squads banded together into one cohesive unit, under one leader.

What is an outfit?
An outfit is a group of people organized together for the sole purpose of playing as a team. Outfits in PlanetSide are comparable to Player Associations or Guilds in other games. Outfit members will have their outfit's name displayed directly below their names in game. Prominent outfits may be able to design their own logos. The minimum number of members to form an outfit is not known, however there is no maximum cap on members.
From http://planetside.station.sony.com/faq.jsp#group
Group Play

What is a squad?
A Squad is a tactical unit of up to 10 players that you gather temporarily together in order to get the necessary skill sets in your attack group (e.g., sniper, heavy armor, dropship pilot, hacker, etc.). Squads can be created and disbanded at any time. They can be considered the equivalent of RPG groups.

Up to three Squads can be linked together (temporarily) into a Platoon in order to better accommodate tactics in a large battle.

What is an Outfit?
An Outfit is an ongoing organization formed by players in order to more easily gather groups of friends to play the game alongside. Unlike a squad, the Outfit will feature a stable membership across play sessions. An Outfit can be considered the equivalent of a clan or a guild in other games.
Nuff said: the official FAQ says it all.
