UK/European release confusion

Frustrated with a seeming lack of information regarding the UK and European release of Planetside and details of any European servers, I decided to email ubisoft tech support to ask them directly:

Could you please confirm whether there will be a UK server available for Planetside when it is released in the UK on 23rd May 2003

This email was sent before the reported Press Statement on Gamesxtreme

Today I got the following reply from a member of Ubisoft's Consumer Advice team

Ubi Soft are responsible for distributing this title in the UK, however we are not providing the servers, this is being supplied by Sony. You will be able to access the US servers from the UK at the release on 23rd May 03.

It would appear that on release of Planetside in Europe, there will be no European Server to support the game.

I'm very disappointed with this, and re-reading the press statement on the aforementioned site, it looks as though we have be misled.

That sucks. Im going to be stationed in Germany for the US-AF and i was looking forward to playing PS once i got out of military training.

That is confusing...

Ive stated for the last 6 weeks on these forums that UbiSoft will be distributing the game and running the servers, as they do for EverQuest.

The official press release confirms this, and its common knowledge that desk jockey telephone support monkees know nothing about the real world the majority of the time.

It *may* be the case that the agreement between SOE and Ubi means they house SOE servers within their property. Who knows...

However it would appear this statement is very misleading as ubisoff claim there will be no european server on release in the UK (see below email).

I'm now very confused and frustrated at the lack of clear information on a UK/European server and when/if they will be available. Could you please confirm what servers will be available on release in Europe.

Hopefully Sony may shine a brighter light on the situation (or confirm the bad news).

A server in Amsterdam would have been great until one in England rolled around.

If we don't have any servers, though.... Damn. I want this game a lot but I'd likely have crap customer experience if I play using the US version.

I find it hard to believe that the UK and Europe aren't considered immediately viable markets.

My thread on Station got this reply from one of the Devs, BlackbirdPS.

Servers should be available in that part of the world at launch. I believe the Netherlands (specifically Amsterdam) will be the location of the server farm.
