there's a vulnerability in the RCP service in Microsoft systems, it's a critical service, so if it gets shut down, the system has to restart

this virus basically exploits that invulnerability, crashing the RCP service after shortly after connecting to the internet, forcing you to restart numerous times

i believe also, either in this virus or in a related virus, there was a denial of service attack to be launched against the microsoft site, probably to keep people infected with the RCP crippling virus from downloading the critical updates that squash this thing

The RPC vulnerability is much more then just a way to get a machine to reboot. After you run the "script-kiddie" tool you can telnet to port 4444 on any NT/2k/XP machine and execute any command with System level permissions.

From what I have been seeing coming across the BugTraq/Incidents newsletters some machines reboot 30 seconds after the hacker is done with your machine.

So first, realize that it is your own fault for A, running a persistant internet connection without a software firewall or a NAT router, and B for not keeping up on your patches, this patch is almost a month old, the script kiddie tool is about two weeks old. Next you will want to do a through virus scan of your system, now download ZoneAlarm, this will tell you if you have a trojan running on your system. The majority of the machines that are being hacked are having an IRC DDoS client installed on them and being used to take down major sites. (Microsoft's patching site was down two Fridays ago)

I personally would want to reload my machine after I knew it had been hacked, since you could easily have a keyboard logger on your computer now.

As the original poster explained, the microsoft patch will fix the vulnerability that allows others to exploit your machine into shutting down.

If your having problems getting the patch due to the "Your machine will shut down in 59..58..57..56" Do the following.

-When the error message with countdown comes up go to 'Start' and then 'Run'

-Type in "cmd" (without the quotes) which will bring up the command prompt

-Now, type "shutdown -a" (again, without the quotes).

This will terminate the shutdown and allow you to download the patch without getting interupted.

Is that what I have? My computer keeps restarting itself, but it dosen't even load windows, never the less being able to download a patch.

No, the problem your having is different. Could you please be a bit more specific?

When does it shutdown? At what stage of start-up? Do you get any error messages? Does your motherboard beep (if so, number of beeps and length)?

Ok, here's as descriptive as i can be.

1.) Start up screen, shows company who made my motherboard, random info, system memory check, fan speed, etc.

2.) A diagnostic table showing current functions that loads quickly (I'm guessing thats what it is, can't read it fast enough)

3.) Error message: We are sorry for the inconvience. Windows was not able to start properly, this could be cause due to new software or hardware changes (I've done neither for a while). If your computer was interuptted doing loading from a power outage, or if you do not know what's wrong, choose Start Windows Normaly. If such and such happens (forget) choose Last Known Good Configuration.

I try both of those and it keeps restarting, very frustrating.

Sounds like your system is hosed...

What OS is it? Your last resort would be to boot off the CD and try a recovery mode to replace whatever file is busted. I would not get your hopes up though, you would be best to hook the hard drive from the dead computer up as a slave on another computer, copy the data off it, then just reload.

Just out of curiosity, do you have cheap ram? This happened to me constantly, then I replaced the $30 for 512mb with "good" ram and have not had a single problem since. My error was complaining about a corrupted registry hive though.

Sounds like a problem I have, but I'm sure mine is hardware related.

My computer restarts by itself, but at random. Some days it might go by fine. Others, it might restart 3 times by itself in a 30 min time period.

Now my hypothosis is that because of the crappy specs (256RAM, Radeon 7000... that's 64MB ppl) is causing my comp to crash, and games to freeze (like Enemy territory, and Jedi knight 2).
But the thing is, I can play those games just fine sometimes, without any problems. And other times they freeze everytime I play for a few mins....

Now know what you're thinking. Heating problem, right?
Well no, cause sometimes the comp can be on for hours, and I can play those games fine. And other times I can just turn it on, and it craps out.
In fact sometimes, rarely, I can start up my comp, and it restarts by itself just as windows loads up.

Now, it's probley just the system ain't stong enough for those games.... but the thing is.... it restarts by itself when I'm just on the internet, or using MSN


Now, it's been doing this for awhile, through many reformatting, so it can't be a virus......right....?
