I can either answer Vimp's concerns thoughtfully and with consideration, or I can try to enlighten by being a smart-ass. Let's try the second one first, and see how that works.
Good Reasons to play Planetside: 1. You want a First Person Shooter with persistence of state. 2. You want to join the chaos of huge three way battles and help turn the tide. 3. You want to storm/infiltrate bases and seize control of them over a 15 minute hell clock. 4. You want to fly a troop transport (or drive an APC) that actually has real troops inside. 5. You want to fly a gunship or scout fighter. 6. You want to defend bases against assaults and infiltration 7. You want to deploy static defenses and tend them while waves of enemy soldiers try to break through. 8. You want to drive/sit gunner in a tank, scout bike, buggy, etc. etc. 9. You want to snipe at the unwary foe and evade the inevitable hunt that follows. 10. You want to be a medic, /engineer, helping your side last longer in attack or defense. Bad Reasons to Play Planetside: 1. You want to go on safari and see herds of indigenous lifeforms 2. You want to bake bread, build a house, or sell forged hammers. 3. You want to socialize and be diplomatic with your enemies. 4. You want to see what soldiers do in their off-time. 5. You want to look up at the sky and ponder when the wormhole will reopen and bring peace to Auraxis, 6. You want to join a group and camp a rare spawn for a rare drop. 7. You want to level up and collect phat lootz. 8. You hope for a better life for the people of Auraxis. 9. You want to talk to an NPC and go find a quest item for him. 10. You want to be immersed in elements outside the primary focus of this game (which is to push your enemies back to their sanctuaries and be master of all you survey).

hehe, riiiight.
Well I'm thinking most of you either missed my whole point or your just not taking the matter seriously and would rather make sneared remarks. If your playing for the 'I like to see people DIE!!' mentallity then yikes. You are some pretty violent people I'd never wanna have the unpleasentness of meeting. Tribes was and is my faverote game and it was not because I like killing and I could only hope others didn't play it for that reason either. |

vimp-
let me try to explain to u. people play games for fun. people get fun from a lot of different ways, and just b/c they get kicks off of killing other players (which provide a fun challenge over AI) doesn't make them any more violent. if u do not like the thought of 'merciless demonic' empires fighting for their survival on a tough environment, maybe this isnt the game for u. survival of the fittest.... |

Here's the thing. They were originally going to have all the mmorpg elements in the game, from apartments to economy/items to social clubs. Then during the course of development they realized that the game lacked focus. While there are groups of people who find many of the non-essential gameplay elements to be engaging and fun, they were still non-essential to the game itself. Planetside is an FPS and the only features that have survived the development cycle are the ones that enhance the FPS gaming experience.
Now the question is what really enhances the game and what is fluff. You love Tribes, so you understand the core of the game lies in using strategy and tactics in a team environment to defeat your enemies. Whereas Tribes was more built around a capture the flag model, PLanetside focuses on capturing actual bases in an Unreal style Domination game. Unfortunately, while ambience such as animal herds and other 'world candy' features are cool, they have nothing to do with the gameplay, and thus won't likely be seen in the game. We're not bloodthirsty mass-murderers, we're FPS gamers. I'm not going to explain the difference.
