Genre Poll

I'm a HUGE fan of FFO. And when people who've played it for 15 minutes or not at all start a bash fest on it, naturally, it got me wondering.

Why are some gamers completely intolerant of a genre that doesnt fit their "playstyle".

FPS games, though fun, are overly simple and repetitive. Only when you can modify the orginal design (Half-Life -> CounterStrike) do these games survive.

RPGs on the other hand, require much more patience (not in the sit in a empty base way, but a dedication way) than other games. I understand that in RPGs you cant simply aim, click mouse1, and pray, but they are not any less fun.

And character development isnt a simple, "Ok, I've leveled up, what new toy do I get?", but more of a progression of yourself (Dungeon Siege is the best example of this).

Im not saying one is better than the other, that is for the individual to decide (I love when they mix, Deus Ex style), and thats why this is a poll. Vote for your genre!

And as for the flamers to this post, I love FPS (Doom3 = preordered) as much as the next guy, but none are very "in-depth" story-wise (minus System Shock and Deus Ex). Try FF7 for PS1 and youll have a greater understanding of RPGs.

Here is a quote straight from PSU itself, "PSU: Where playing Dungeons and Dragons isn't frowned upon."

I love Planetside.

With that being said, it is unfortunately getting boring as well. I may venture off into the FFXI world to see what it has to offer, and I will make sure my account with PS remains in tact.

I will probably take a break from PS and try something new for awhile. My break wont be long, as I love this game.

not saying i dont play PS either, but FFO is far from a Evercrack copy. The entire feel of the game is different. Alot more laidback. Get in a party, you'll have a blast!

I love RPG's omg. My favorite gaming moments were from square, not EA. I love lvling, acquiring new items, and then go around killing things. Halo and BF 1942 are awesome, but in the longrun, i had more fun with the final fantasies and other square RPG's.

FPS>RPG, its just more fun. I don't like to sit around and "chat" with people IN A GAME. I tried Morrowind, not fun, tried some of the FF's.....again not fun. It's so boring, I don't understand what you guys see in them. I can talk to people with AIM or in Person, but in a game I'm paying monthly for, no no. And the "combat" and "action" in most RPG's......*sigh*, I can see more action and combat in one of the Presidential debates!!

I just like FPS' more, simply because the thigns I fight in them rarely use the same pattern of attack. In RPG's, such as FFXI, It's just point, double-click. Planetside has all sorts of hiding behind cover, reloading, switching weapons. Strategy thats just not apparent in FFXI.

Thats a tough question! But my gaming habits have changed from being able to play for hours on end, to wanting a quick 20 min game then quitting... So FPS trumps RPG once again for me.

I don't like most video game RPGs much. You basically play out a pre-though pre-planned story. I'd rather just read the story to be honest. I like pencil and paper Rpgs like D&D though. The reason for that is because the players can do whatever they want within reason. In FF whatever, you have to go into the dungeon, follow a set path, knock down all the enemies and fight the boss in the end. In similar situations in D&D my players have done things like reroute streams to flood the dungeon with water, thus killing all the monsters or tunnel down from above directly into the treasue room. You get to use your brain in pencil and paper rpgs.

Now for shooters. They are basically the same thing, you progress through the game, shooting characters put in place, picking up guns and powerups when you are supposed to. Other than Halo and a few others I don't like shooters much either.

Things get interesting in the MMO area.
Most MMORPGs are boring. Dungeons set up with spawn points and set paths for monsters. Most of the time you end up sitting around and chatting while whacking orcs everytime they come up. Boring as shit. The only thing exciting about them is PVP which, unfortunately, nobody has been able to make fun so far.

Multiplayer is where shooters have always shined. You can lay traps, set up complicated maneuvers, outsmart, outplay and outshoot your competition. This is where the big draw to FPS games has really always been. A MMO shooter like PS if executed correctly is destined to do well.

Now for FFXI. I played this game for a month. I was not impressed. The graphics were great, animations were awesome. There were no technical problems I could see, great all around. Unfortunately, boring as shit. You end up doing the same thing you do in EVERY other MMORPG. You sit around and chat while waiting for monsters to spawn or you sit around and chat while prattling away with expensive tradeskills. It even took me a WEEK to get another player to actually respond to me and want to go hunting. I tried chatting with other players and 98% of them don't even respond. They are too busy sitting around waiting for their monsters, playing with tradeskills or wanking it to their female elvaan character.

Now lets compare this to PS. Within minutes hopping in the game you can pick some certs and head out to battle. Longest wait I've ever had for a pickup group: 12 minutes. If not in an outfit the longest wait I've ever had for an outfit invite was about two hours. Not only that, but you don't even have to be in a squad to survive.
Other bonuses include No exp penalty for death, you do not need money, and pvp is actually fun ( and required!)

PS does not count when voting FPS becasue it is an RPG style concept with the moment to moment unrealism removed. Its only called an FPS by anyone because it involves guns. You could take away the guns and add somehitng else like a sim or a hospital and have certs to do surgery and get the same thing. This is what you call. FPRP... First Person RolePlaying with weapons.

And is FPS>RPG or RPG>FPS for RPGs.

OR should i say First Person RolePlaying with live combat instead of Turn based combat! So for all you FPS players.... This IS an RPG. Have fun! And see what youve been missing all these years!

Thats whats causing you to say stuff like it has something different. Get a AD&D book, read it, get into a discussion about playing styles, and compare it to arguing about the cert issue or anything else in hte game. Damage arguments do not escape this. 8p

Welcome to the world of ROLE PLAYING!!!!
