Question about FFXI worlds plz read

After hearing various things, I've deduced that you cant choose your own server. What I need to know is:
How is your server determined?
Are there anyways to foil it?

The only reason I am getting the game is so my best friend and I can play together. Now he said something about it being based on where you live. If that's the case, I assume we would be ok, since he lives in north carolina and i'm in virginia. Please respond because if it's not likely i will get to play with him, then I will take the game back.

There is a way to foil it but it takes some time.

Server placement seems relatively random.

If you have a charachter and want to be on another server: delete that chartacter.

What you can do is create a character. When you are done with that character you will see what server it is on. If it is not the server you want, delete that character and start over. Repeat this process un til you get the server you want.

It seems like a few people need a worldpass... What server do you plan on playing on?

If by east coast you mean Japan, then they're all east coast. I don't think it has anything to do with where you're located, I think they just assign people to the lowest populated server to keep things balanced. Figure out the name of the server your buddy is on, or decide which you want to be on then post that and someone can help you more specifically. Most people from around here are on Kajuta.
