He can find early P4 boards that support the same ram as the P3s. They made alot of boards when the first P4s were trying to pick up. Someone at a used computer store could get him one. IF he has that little money. Not saying he needs to do that.

SHIT! are u saying the 700+ RAM i have now wont work with a P4 or AMD??

If you aren't ocing, ram shouldn't be a problem. If you plan on getting a 2.4 p4 or a 2500+ you can get pc2700 ram which is pretty cheap if you look in the right places.

Wrong form factor, that's what's wrong. Your ram has 168 pins (i think) and DDR ram (which is what will be on your new motherboard) uses 184 pins. Sorry dude. Go to www.pricewatch.com and check out the prices on system memory listed there. You can get 768mb of DDR for relatively cheap ( < $100 ).

Did you ever figure out what mb you have? But no matter what it is, if you actually have a P3-500... i seriously doubt its DDR. Why don't you go do a google search for cpuid, d/l it, and run it. Then tell us what you find out.

You prolly also have a Slot-1 P3 and can pretty much only go up to around a 1ghz P3 and the slot versions of those are rather rare and expensive these days.

So either spend $150-200 on a new P3 cpu you don't know will work or spend about the same amount on the cheapest AMD MB/CPU combo you can find and 512 DDR. Won't be the best quality, but still be much faster than what you got or the faster P3.

There where actually one or two Chipsets from SiS that did. Small Chipsets that were for buiness use manily. Never really that big though.
