If I remeber correctly Dragons were first mentioned in the tale of Heracles (or Hercules) when he fought the Lernaean hydra. At least as if my memory serves me correctly that was the earliest writing that I can remember. Some people probably found a T-Rex fossil and said "this must be a dragon"
