The prob I had with the gamevoice software was that MS put in something that you had to have a min of 12 peeps on using it before it would work. The Sidewinder Gamevoice hardware is an awsome idea and works with any other chat/voice software with no prob. I haven't had a single prob with the hardware since I got it when it first came out. RW had some issues at time but, since Gamespy took it over it's not really worth the down load imo. Battle Com, Team Speak, and even an instant messenger chat program like Yahoo works ok but, definitely if you have another comp, host it on a dedicated server or have a highend machine that can handle running the game and the com program. If you haven't you know of the lag issues with the game and the delayed speach probs I'm talking about.

I play online Games since Quake TeamFortress and Diablo...
When Halflife cames out i got started with Voicechats.... first i used was BattleCom. My Opinion abaout BC, TS, RW, GV. Battlecom 1.32/1.34: Still the best Voicequality with low-Badwidthuse.(Delta/Standart) Very compatible to all games. Problems with Routers when trying to conenct to a server.... first u have to pipe some ports directly to the Network-IP, if they are masqueradet. Great user interface.Good settings available. BC-Servers are powerful can take many chatters. My alternative solution. TeamSpeak2.0: For me the best Voicechat-Proggy available. Excellent Voicequality with less more Bandwidthuse than BC.(GSM14.8 or 16.4) Compatible to all games too. Perhaps u have to fix some adjustments. Best user interface. Good settings available. TS2.0-Servers are stablest i know and have a great capacity. My favorite. Rogerwilco(new-one): For me the most shitty Voicechat out Inet. Voicechat with lowest Voicequality and lowest Bandwith. Very simple. Compatible to most/all games. I hate it. GameVoice: Voicechat-Proggy with medium Voicequality but more bandwitdhuse than all other voice-progs. U must-have a registerered Version to open a Host with mroe than 5 Client-Slots(i think, long time ago). Medium user interface. Only a few settings available. It is Microsoft made..... I have never been able to get BCom to work properly on my computer. I always hear nothing but garbled voices. I have had better results with gamevoice and rogerwilco.
TS2 sems to be the best though. Best quality and it seems like it has the best user compatability.

Got some great feedback there..
admittedly, I've tried RW, but thought it was crap voice quality.. I've used Gamevoice primarily but will try Teamspeak for sure.. Ranger: I'm not sure what you were mentioning about needing 12 people to run GV, I have a GV chat set up dedicated on my server and then jump on from my comp.. Talk to a friend of mine in California all the time, avoids all that long distance.. Sometimes there's an echo but it was worth it for the quick communication.. My main gripe would be that sometimes people got dropped from the conversation, and there were issues getting into the chat if I wasn't the first one in.. With all this positive feedback, looks like I'll have to give Teamspeak a try, thanks guys.. |

Use Ventrilo. We've got a server at a data farm in Dallas with a 150 day uptime and 40 pings from Tennesee to Canada.

What's the bandwidth required for the server?
My cable modem is something on the order of 1024 down, 128 up (super downloads, upload not very super). Bout how many people can I expect to host on that? I have a seperate computer I can use to run the server, but it'll be sharing the network with my main computer. |
