Let us begin by stating the obvious: I hate RPGs. 99% of them. The ones I don't hate are misnomered by the media as RPGs, like Deus Ex.
I played WCIII, and was like "Cool, humans have GUNS." Now, if an RPG didn't commit too many of the Seven Deadly Sins AND had guns, AND I was familiar with the storyline, I'd try it. So, therefore, I ask you, the RPG-minded fools: --------------------------------------------------------- THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS OF RPGs AztecWarrior 1:1-7 1. Does WoW rely on a turn-based combat system, or "Combat Mode"? (I.E. I attack, then lie defenseless because it's your turn to attack). 2. Is there a "level system?" To what extent does this screw over newbies and mid-level characters when fighting veterans? 3. Dice rolls to determine accuracy? 4. Dice rolls to determine damage? 5. Is Player-Killing allowed, and do you get your items back? 6. Are you pushing buttons the entire game, or is skill involved? By "skill" I mean it in the FPS/Simulator sense. You don't just tell him where to go and what to attack. That bores me. 7. Lust. Does the game's advertisements rely on half-nude elves to sell (i.e. Lineage II, EverQuest.) (Obviously, WoW passed this one.) It's not that I'm uber-moral, it's just that I'd hate to see a game resort to sensuality to sell a game that isn't sensual at all. I can expect that from, oh, Leisure Suit Larry, but there is no real sensuality in EQ. --------------------------------------------------------- Is it still in Beta? Will there/is there a monthly fee?

The gun kata treats the gun as a total weapon, each fluid position representing a maximum kill zone, inflicting maximum damage on the maximum number of opponents while keeping the defender clear of the statistically traditional trajectories of return fire. By the rote mastery of this art, your firing efficiency will rise by no less than 120%. The difference of a 63% increase to lethal proficiency makes the master of the gun katas an adversary not to be taken lightly. |

1. Its real-time but it feels kinda turn based.
2. Yes theres a level system, it works like any other MMO, except you can gain talent points and skill points you can spend on abilities like blacksmithing. 3. No, well, kinda. Ive never used ranged weapons so I dont really know. but it works by percentages, right now my character has a 5% chance of parrying an attack, and a 98% chance of hitting the target, it mostly goes by what level you are, who or what youre attacking, what spells are being used, and so on. 4. I think so. My basic attack does anywhere between 24 and 48 damage, Im not entirely sure how its determined. 5. PvP is only allowed on the PvP server. Right now if you see a member of an opposing faction, you cant really do anything. and no one can loot your corpse when you die, you just "Resurrect" when you come close to it in ghost mode. 6. Well, yes and no. Im a warrior, so I just tell my character to attack and he does it, and I basically tell him what moves to do, based on my rage levels, so if youre in a challenging fight, there is skill involved. 7. Nah, since Im a tauren, I hardly see any near nudity from my fellow orcs and undead and what not. Its not like Lineage 2 at all, where everyone looks like strippers. -Still in beta, yes. -Monthly fee will come with release, around november. |

Each class has a series of "skill trees" similar to Diablo 2. Mages for example have (off the top of my head) fire and ice (as well as others I can't remember). Well, you have to work your way down the tree to get to the highest level talents, and the more points you put into a talent, the stronger it is. There is, however, a limit to the number of points you can get and how many you can put into one talent to prevent maxing all your talents and becomming an one man wrecking crew. Every class has different talents, needless to be said, but the Warriors "stance" talents are the best I think.

Aztec, thats what RPGs are, if you dont like them, then dont play them. However, one I know you will be interested in will be Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines. It's an RPG FPS built that uses the HL2 elements. Hits are determined by aim, not but electronic dice rolls. I would recommend downloading the video walkthrough from fileplanet to get a better sense of the game. Personally I think it looks sweet.
