Hi all, I'm really excited about this. But one thing keeps chaping my hide. There isn't a whole lot of buzz about this game so far. I'm subscribed to a few pc game mags and there isn't crap about this game. I mean SWG had like 4 covers dedicated to it, plus a preview and its only in 2 beta testing. I think it's unfair becuase the more the word gets out about this game, the more players there are to play with/against. I think this game needs more buzz to it.

Picture this. we all get our brand new copy of planet side. put it in the pc,log on only two find 20 people playing. That would totaly blow.I think this game has Awesome potential but it needs to talked about. If the mags and other such media outlets don't start paying attention then besides us...who is?

If you are wondering why there is little coverage and buzz about planetside it is due to marketing. In marketing there is something called the marketing widow, this is why you will see tons of information in the beggining and end of a development cycle [3 years].
In the beggining they can say whatever they want, because they are trying to get ideas from the users [forum goers] but once the game design is pretty much set in stone [although all games have design changes once they see what is fun] then the developers have no real "use" for interacting with the forum goers. And talking with forum goers may actually be detrinmental to they product sales [will be explained]. At this point many publishers [the big company, the guys with "suits"] will step in and intentionally gag the developers from talking with the forum goers. This is done to quiet the game down, so that it can come back out in a huge explosion. For example remember what happend to planetside about a year ago? The game had no updates at all for about six monthes, then the day of E-3 they started releasing tons of information to get people interested. As this game hits beta 2/3 and the publisher can guess that the release will be about 2-3 monthes off then the publisher will contact all the magainzes and start giving out information, start buying full page adds, start buying the right to put up posters in your local game stores and so on. At this point the game will have tons of press and the buzz will explode. The publisher does not want buzz right now, because if people hear about a game for too long [ultima 9, duke nukem forever, diakia, Zelda 2] people just don't care anymore when the game actaully comes out. The marketing window dictates that you hype a product for about 2 monthes as much as you can then release, then continue to hype for another month of so then slowly taper it off once it looks like you are not going to sell enough more copies to justify the cost of advertising. The reason SWG has so much Buzz and has had it the entire time, is because its a really friggin cool game. The media just won't go away, even if the marketing guys hate it. It's one of the nicest looking games in a long time that is set in the COOL Star Wars world [not with all the fruity new stuff], that is offering many many new play experiences when it comes to MMO's. |

What's this? Stick100 WRONG? No way! </scathing sarcasm>
PS hasn't been hyped because the dev team had to nearly overhaul PS from scratch because they started to run with "neat ideas" that really didn't run parallel to the goal of PlanetSide (ie: apartments). So many things had to be re-evaluated, changed, dropped completely, that they didn't want to release all sorts of info and screenshots of things that weren't going to be the same in 3 months, or might even be dropped entirely before release. In an ideal world, you wouldn't know about a game until everything was locked down for release, but this is hardly a perfect world, so some mistakes were made The important thing is, they recovered, dealt with it as best they knew possible, and are now getting ready for the final stage of developement so that we can all play

Want to know why SWG gets so much attention? here is why: 1)Star Wars sells. 2)Star Wars sells and makes money. 3)People like to buy Star Wars crap. SWG will sell more then PS. I can gaurentee that. So why dump a lot of promotions on PS when SWG will be the one that will bring in the most profit? SWG will appeal to a large amount of people and frankly, PS won't. PS is really an untested genre that dosen't have 30 years of history like SWG. This limits the types of players who will play PS.
